I was going through the BN Photo Archive and came across this photo:

I see a BN GP38X coupled to a locomotive number 2002 in what appears to be Frisco paint. I figured the date had to be a typo, but looking at the patched FMC 4700 cuft hopper and the tanks in the background, maybe the date is right after all. So, was there a Frisco locomotive still roaming the rails in 1995? What is this number 2002? It's a four axle EMD with Blomberg M trucks and a ratchet handbrake, but that's all I've got.

    Any ideas what this is?

This/ or was CW GP38-2 #2002. They painted two locomotives really close to Frisco's colors. But it is not a exFrisco locomotive. I can't remember all the details. But there are a lot of differences between the C&W GP 38-2's and the ones that Frisco had. I shot it back in 1995 in Tulsa, Ok. Here's a couple of links to the pictures I took of it.

Hope this helps to answer your question.

Thanks, Joel. I figured something was up with the 2000 number series, but I didn't expect to see a Frisco inspired paint scheme. That's pretty cool.

The C&W operates on trackage in and around CF&I at Pueblo CO, at one time they ran to Trinidad and up to a CF&I coal mine just West of Weston CO.
The mine has been closed for some time, and the rails taken up to the mine. Tried to hire out with the C&W back in the 80's, glad they didnt hire me..
They sure do look like Frisco Geeps dont they?

Back in 1995 when I shot this locomotive. When I went to the yard. The first place I always went to was the locomotive shops (I like to call it, "The Locomotive Rest Area"). And when I turned that corner and that orange came into my view. I was so stumped. My jaw dropped, and I was rubbing my eyes trying to make sence of it. But as I kept driving. I started noticing how small the letters were. When I finally got close enough to read for sure what it said on the side of the loco. I think I stared at that locomotive for 5 minutes with out moving at all. I will admit though, I was some what disappointed. But at the same time, all I wanted to do was jump out and get some shots of it. Glad I did. I never saw it again after that.

Since you identified it, I've found more photos of it, including some nice detail shots at North Yard (that's where I spend most of my time). It would make a cool project someday.
