Hi, This is Larry from Meridian ID. My fascination with trains started when I was very young. My grandfather was a Brakeman for the Great Northern Ry. He started in 1917 and spent most of his career based in Minot ND, moving later to Kelso WA, and finally to Spokane. I was born and raised in Spokane where we had a large GN presence with the depot downtown and the shops in Hillyard. I'm a retired Hewlett Packard electrical engineer. After retirement, I did fork for a while for Motive Power (Wabtec), developing locomotive electrical system test capability. My wife Kay and I now own Vizcaya Winery in Kuna, ID. I have a substantial collection of GN memorabilia including calendars, dinnerware, etc. I also have a collection of early Marx model trains. Best regards, Larry
Welcome to the Frisco website Larry!!! Great Northern may be your first love and that's OK. Frisco was a powerhouse in their own right and I'm sure you will like what you see here. We have a great group of members that can help you with any questions. Feel free to look around. Joe
Larry, Welcome Aboard! Glad you decided to check in and learn about another great railroad that was absorbed by the green scourge.
Welcome aboard! The Great Northern was a super-neat railroad. We certainly have one thing in common: The Big Nasty consumed both our favorite railroads. Andre
Larry - Welcome to frisco.org. It's a neat organization, full of neat people, and its topic is a neat railroad! I'm from St Louis, but now live in Naples, FL (hey, was -4 deg F this morning in StL!). Before I retired, I spent a lot of time in Idaho, where I was responsible for a large raw materials plant we operate in Soda Springs, Idaho in Caribou County. Loved it out there with many visits each year, usually about three every two months. Even got several rides on the Union Pacific, who was our biggest rail carrier. Enjoy frisco.org! Off topic, but what wines do you produce? (Another of my hobbies!) Ken
...a little ahead of things. It was +44 F this morning when I fetched the paper from the curb. It will go to -2 on Wednesday AM, though with wind-chills in the -20 to -30 range.
George - Thought I saw CBS' morning weather map at breakfast today show StL at -4 deg F. Must have been a prediction for tonight. In any event - Brrrrr! K ps - We had a bad weekend here in Naples as well. Cold, windy, overcast and rain for most of Saturday and all of Sunday. I forget the temp, low 40's something yesterday, but it set a new low record and was just plain miserable. Also Brrrrr! But, we needed the rain as it has been dry for several weeks.
You guys need to quit complaining and be thankful: Just think how bad it WOULD have been if it weren't for "global warming"! I shudder to think. Andre
Larry, welcome to the group. Have always been fond of the GNs 4-8-2s and 4-8-4s. Nice looking pieces of machinery. Best Regards,
