During the 60's Ft Scott was still a busy hub. A Baldwin switch engine worked a daily shift, and the KC Sub, the Afton Sub, and the Ash Grove Sub locals worked in and out of Ft Scott. It was stlll a crew change point. I believe that the RIP track still made minor repairs to cars that were cut from trains. The 100 foot turntable was extant, and the foundation and pits from the large Ft Scott roundhouse were still evident. During the 60's the Mp abandoned it's track into town and the Frisco acquired some of it to serve the industries that were left "high and dry".
While desperately seeking photos of the "KY" interlocking tower referenced by Karl, I came across some neat aerial photos of Ft. Scott in the 1960-1970 range on the "Kansas Memory" website: http://www.kansasmemory.org/item/210429 The roundhouse is long gone, but the shadows of it are still in existence. There's also a really good close up of both Olathe depots, which will help my personal modeling efforts greatly. Best Regards,
Chris - this is a neat photo to look at - thanks for sharing. Question: is the track that crosses, just outside the yard ladder, Missouri Pacific ?? Observation: the yard was pretty empty when this photograph was taken - was business down, or was it staged to be this way? Any thoughts - Bob
