Keith - Thanks for posting this.
There appears to be a mistake in the text of the lower right of page 39 of the article.
Quote: "All the handrails were painted red, while the supports were painted white".

Shouldn't this be the other way round?

Good spotting, the photos certainly show white rails and darker supports. "Do as I show, not as I write," perhaps?

Sherrel, good catch. I had not yet looked it over closely. The stanchions were indeed the Chevy Engine Red color and the railings white.

One thing I found interesting that I didn't know - the walkways were painted black after 76? I haven't seen any good shots that verify this - most of the above angle shots I see the walkways look just like the grimy red roof. And one shot of GP15 #105, those walkways definitely look red to me: http://condrenrails.com/Frisco/Frisco Diesels/GP15-1/slsf105abp.jpg

Also, was there any rhyme or reason on the top colors of the stanchions? Seems some were red, and some were painted white to match the handrails. My guess is the white-topped stanchions were a late 70's revision to the original scheme as well...or not. Just noticing the GP15s and SD40-2 are white, the GP40s are red. And it looks like the SD38s were split...dynamic break version had white tops, the second set were red. Being an n-scaler I had to pretty much paint my own so I notice these things. :)

    Hi Mike,
I had not considered the 76 date, But would agree that post 1976 SLSF units, had the Black, anti skid walkways. My research of most if not all of the Dash 2, GP/SD 38/40-s did have the Black anti skid walkways. But the SLSF GP50's did not. The Black anti-skid was applied with rollers amd brushes, so it was not as surgical as some might think, in fact it was kinda slopped on as a Safety measure. I have come up with some decals for EMD, GP and SD Walkways, as pictured, but I cannot supply any sort of sustainable supply of these decals. I would help any custom decal maker with any of the decal info I have, free of charge. I was working with this Athearn RTR SD40-2. Please consider the attached. The one photo shows the eraser used to remove the factory numbers. I have masked the other windows so we can weather this work horse to reflect the many years of service in an unforgiving environment. I have been messing with this loco for a few weeks. 004.JPG 006.JPG 010.JPG 011.JPG

Gorgeous model, Tom - can't wait to see it grunged up, and good info. I hope to some day return to modelling - I've got several locos that need updating now! heh.

Also I believe the white on the edge of the steps was a late 1970's addition.

    |-|I have a few of these in the works right now in different stages of detail and weathering. Here is one of the latest. I might even try to do the entire class of locomotives:)|-| 015.JPG 017.JPG

I remember that article from the June, 1988 Mainline Modeler. (Sure miss that magazine - I still have every issue). The main reason I remember it is that I found it interesting that a detailed guide on the modern Frisco o/w paint scheme included a "Frisco Lines over the bar" logo in the diagram.

Ah, now that just looks RIGHT! :) If Kato ever does these in N, I would be tempted to do the entire class myself, too.
