    SLSF 5200-5231, ALCo FA-1

Frisco bought their ALCo FA-1/FB-1's in A-B-A sets. Notice again that the first diagram shows to A-B-A set to be considered as one locomotive.

The FA-1 was powered by ALCo's new 244 engine. The engine was rushed into production and proved to be a big headache. Common problems centered around the air cooled turbocharger, the crankshaft, pistons, and electrical components. Frisco operating people soon grew to regret having these units on the roster - the Frisco never bought another ALCo product after they received the ALCo RS-2's that were already on order. The RS-2 was also powered by the ill-fated ALCo 244 engine.

ALCo offered a fix for the turbo - a water cooled unit. A few of the Frisco units were so modified - SLSF 5220 is an example.

The Frisco attempted to solve the 244 problem permanently by having their FA's reowered by EMD to use the reliable EMD 567 engine. This proved costly, and not all of the FA's were repowered.

The following Frisco FA-1's were repowered in 1955-1957 with the EMD 567: SLSF 5200-5209, 5211-5213, 5215-5219. (Ref: "Frisco Diesel Power", Marre/Harper)

Notice that the SLSF diagram for the repowered FA-1's does not indicate the numbers of the units that were repowered.
