Indeed, the picture of SLSF 2022 sitting at EMD all bashed in in 1952 from the accident, but displaying the name "Champion" rather than its original name "Middleground" is somewhat of a mystery!

The Frisco lore for several decades has been that SLSF 2022 got clobbered at Ft. Scott and was taken back to EMD for repairs. During the repair, per the lore, SLSF 2022's name was changed to honor Gene Autry, a popular western star and a former Frisco employee.

    So, what about the picture?

Could it be that 2022 had its name changed by the Frisco and then was involved in the accident?

Or, could it be that after arriving at EMD, they changed the name first in the paint shop before beginning the needed repairs to the locomotive?

Or, is this a well done photoshop job?

I fear we will never know the answer! I agree that the rename provided a much more appropriate horse name, as the original was way too long. Indeed, as noted in my 4/19/2018 posting above, I changed the name on my P2K model using the Herald King decals. An easy fix!

Alas, my SLSF 2022 was purchased by someone during our estate sale in 2016. I recall the same fellow also bought SLSF 2018. I have always preferred the original release of the P2K E8As, SLSF 2016 and 2020, rather than the second P2K release, SLSF 2018 and 2022. They are different.
