Howdy, Attached is the museum's Frisco Freight Car Diagram booklet - No 2, Frisco Hopper Cars 1923-1971. This booklet may duplicate other diagrams on the forum, but it does provide a central source for topical diagrams. Thanks to Richard Napper for scanning the diagrams. Best, mike
Need a little help here - please. I have a ribbed hopper car photo from the form #86212 I can find no reference to this number in this diagram book. What gives?
Sherrel - The museum's Frisco hopper car diagram book only goes up to 1971. 86212 is a newer car. Perhaps someone in the group has a diagram for it. Do you know when it was built? Ken
This question interested me, so I made an attempt to look up some information about when hoppers were first introduced. In 1904 I don't see any hopper listed for FRISCO. In the 1912 Railway Equipment Register I found the following for FRISCO (may not be a complete list, small print, I might have skipped some). 20101 - 20400 "Twin Hopper" (276 cars) 20401 - 20500 "Self Cl (clearing?) Hopper" (91 cars) 80400 - 80899 "Coal steel, self clr'g hopper" (40 cars) 80900 - 80999 (8 cars) 81000 - 81299 (29 cars) "Coal, Stl. Fme. Self Clr'g hop" 81300 - 81799 (49 cars) "Hop[. Stl. Fme. Coal" 81800 - 81899 (9 cars) "Coal all Stl. Drop Bottom" It is my GUESS that these were all open cars. I wouldn't think that there was too much, if any, demand for a closed hopper at this time. The way the list is worded the 2000 series cars may have been more like high sided wooden coal cars, perhaps with hatches in the sides??? The comment "all steel drop bottom" for 81800-81899 is interesting. MAYBE this was the first of what we think of as a modern (all steel) open hopper on the FRISCO??? I didn't see any of these cars listed on any diagrams I have access to.
Ken, durned if I can find one. Did a search plus reviewed the FMIG Newsletter index and went through any hard copies that I have. No luck on this car/series. I'd have to think that someone will come across one. Best Regards,
Thanks Chris. Like many of us, I'm very short on Frisco car diagrams after 1974. This car is shown in the Molo book on page 100, built by Greenville in 1977. I'd like to get a diagram to see some of the car's specifics. K
Ken, they aren't in the Hopper Car Diagrams book from the Frisco Museum and I haven't seen any elsewhere.
Keith - I know - the FRM diagram booklet for hopper cars does not have anything after 1971-1972. I have a diagram book from 1974, but still no soap, these guys were built in 1977. Somewhere in frisco.org, we must have a more modern freight car diagram book, late 1970's to 1980 at least! Help! Ken
