It seems we rarely have good close-up pictures of Frisco F3B / F7B / F9B units.

Here are two F9Bs from my "Enid" negative collection, both in Mandarin orange and white paint and that have been renumbered.

F9B SLSF 140, EMD, renumbered from SLSF 5140
F9B SLSF 141, EMD, renumbered from SLSF 5141

Note the large 48" diameter dynamic brake fan the F9Bs carried.

Also note the characteristic F9 Farr side grills and the SLSF-applied lifting screen spark arrestors.

    Re: Frisco F9B question

    Hi Ken,

I bought a Highliner F B-unit shell at a train show. I am going to make a F9B out of it.

The instructions indicate windows in the end doors may have been round instead of the square.

After looking at your pictures and others I can find, I really cannot see if the Frisco used round or square windows.

Do you have any ideas about shape of the windows in the doors?

Also, they did use 48" dynamic brake fans correct?

Any ideas and comments are always welcome.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Tom,

None of my pictures show the end door and window on the F9Bs.

On all the pictures I have that show the ends, the doors are all open! One cannot see the window in the door.

In Dr. Marre's Frisco Diesel Power, photographs of F7Bs SLSF 5109 and SLSF 5132 are shown on page 88. F7B SLSF 5109, new in 1948, has the square door window, while F7B 5132, new in 1951, has the round porthole type window.

The F9Bs came in 1954 and 1957. Without benefit of a clear photograph as evidence, I would guess round porthole for the F9Bs as well.

A quick check of the Extra 2200 South, January 1970 article "All About Fs" does not provide an answer either.

They do note that in 1950, all F-unit cab door corners became rounded.

Yes, a 48" dynamic brake fan was used on the SLSF F9Bs. The same fan size was also used on the two former F3As rebuilt as F9As.
