    Monett, MO :)

    Monett, MO today.

I have found all that remains of the passenger depot foundation, platforms, and the existing Frisco/BNSF metal Armco depot for employees.

My grandpa, Bud Boyne, was a freight conductor for the Frisco.

His runs were between Tulsa, OK and Monett, MO. He never took trains into Springfield, MO. They would always change crews in Monett then go on from there.

As a kid, I always thought it was strange that they would not just go on to Springfield. I guess there were either regulations or union agreements that prevented it.

My grandpa did not mind it though as he had family in the area. In fact he was born in Monett and his dad, who was an engineer for the Frisco, was transferred to Tulsa just as they moved the main yard from Sapulpa, OK to Tulsa, OK.

If anyone out there happens to have known or worked with my grandpa I would appreciate any stories you might want to pass on about him.

    Terry,

I hired out in June 1971, and made the run to Monett.

    When did he retire?

The freight crews stopped at Monett because it was a division point. We began running through Tulsa to Springfield about 1972. Help out there, my mind is not working.

I can remember talking to Emmett McGee, the engineer I was working with as his fireman, about what he thought the effect would be on the crews after we started running through, but I cannot remember the exact date.

As it turned out, the run became the preferred run for Tulsa crews.

    Terry,

He retired in 1980 just before the merger and passed away in 1982.

His given name was Harold but most folks called him Bud or Buddy Boyne. I do not recall him ever running through to Springfield though. I think he always stopped at Monett.

I would bet you guys would have worked together as Tulsa - Monett was the only run he did.

I remember asking him if the BN and Frisco would ever merge after I heard the news of the potential merger and he was adamant that it would never happen.

    Oh well...

    Terry,

Sorry to be so long in responding.

I did not visit the sight much last week due too many doctor appointments :( and full session tickets to the Conference USA tournament here in Tulsa. I remember the name Buddy Boyne, but I do not remember any trips specifically with him. I will try to make contact with some of the men who worked regularly on the Monett run, to see if any of them remember him.

Incidentally, my first student run was on train No 438 called at 8:15 pm to Monett. I remember getting to Monett and, since I was a student, I had no place to go. I stayed in the depot until the first west bound train to Tulsa came through.

It was a long night, but only the first of many I later learned.

    Terry,

In talking with my dad last night I discovered that in his later years, my grandpa did in fact make the runs through to Springfield.

He did not like that change at all because when he stopped at Monett he could stay with family rather than having to pay for a motel.

Also, he was out on the run longer when they went up to Springfield as the layover was longer.
