Took these a year ago this month on a trip through Lawton, OK.

The 4-8-2 SLSF 1526 is at the Museum of the Great Plains alongside the SLSF depot from Elgin, OK. The locomotive is in fairly good condition and has not been subjected to the usually "static display" vandalism.

Not sure if Frisco repainted the locomotive before being presented for display but paint does appear to be original.

I have a whole roll of black and white closeups of SLSF 1526.

I grew up in Lawton, OK so the folks let me crawl all over it.

I am in the middle of converting my slides to digital photographs, so I will mount the negatives and copy them, too.

    Thanks for the photographs.

I think Andy Harmantas had something to do with the striping. LOL.

    Right Andy?

    Best Regards,

    Mike

I do not know if that is the original paint job or not, but if it is, it's held up well.

If it is not, someone over the years did a nice job of keeping her authentic.

I remember when they restored her here at Lindenwood Yard roundhouse in St. Louis, MO.

I think I even shot some 8mm color movies of her mid train moving through Webster Groves, MO on the way to Lawton, OK.

    All shiny and pretty.

It looks like the smokebox has been painted black and the striping has faded, otherwise, it looks about the same.

I did the striping and lettering back in the late 1970s.

Other fans sprayed gloss black over all of it. The paint was donated by the Frisco. The imitation gold paint was Dupont Dulux enamel, and came from the Frisco shops, according to the label. I made masks of the original lettering before they sprayed it black, then applied the masks, and brushed on the lettering and striping.

When it was delivered to Lawton, OK it was operational. Newly painted, with oil in the bunker and sand in the dome.

I wish they had moved it under cover so it would be protected.

Seeing the 4-8-2 SLSF 1526 sure brings back memories.

I grew up in Lawton, OK and loved going to the museum to see it when I was a kid. An old-timer once told me that they used tanks from Ft. Sill to push it to the museum. They kept moving portable panel section tracks in front of it as it rolled along.

I wish they would find a way to cover it.

I crawled all over it in my youth and took black and white photographs of details.

I will dig them up and post them if folks would like some details.

I think I got the top of the boiler and tender.

Seems we only see the sides in photographs, so hard to detail the top surfaces.

    Best,

    Mike

Here are a couple of shots of the 4-8-2 SLSF 1526 in better days.

Not sure when the locomotive left Lindenwood Yard in St. Louis, MO for Lawton, OK but these could not have been taken long after.

The slide holders are dated April, 1962.

I know the last post on here is over a year old but I wanted to share a picture of 4-8-2 SLSF 1526 with you guys.

It is of SLSF 1526 being moved to its current location. A portion of a tank can be seen to the right in the picture.

I had read and heard tanks moved the SLSF 1526.

I have a picture of my mom as a child next to this train, pictures of me on the train as a child and my wife and me.

We were married next to this train in 2008 at the museum of the Great Plains in Lawton, OK.

  13. Interesting way to move a locomotive.

Of course that would not go down in this day and age.

I would assume they had something to buffer between the locomotive and the tank to prevent damage to either.

Unless towing it with cable from tank.

Looks like it is being moved to its final home with an M-46 Patton tank.

Two tanks from the 45th Infantry Division, Fort Sill, OK pulled the 4-8-2 SLSF 1526.

Lindenwood roundhouse crew did an excellent job cosmetically restoring engines.

    4-8-2 SLSF 1501, 1522, 1526, 1527 and 2-10-0 SLSF 1621 were all restored there.

One of the good things they did was remove the boiler lagging and at least in 4-8-2 SLSF 1522's case, replaced the jacketing with galvanized sheet metal.

For some reason, when they sent the 4-8-4 SLSF 4501 to Texas, they just pulled her off the deadline and shipped her as is. Never figured out why.

I wonder if the poor 4-8-2 SLSF 1527 is still cursed with that awful paint job in Mobile, AL?

Note how they cocked the turret a little so the driver would not conk his noggin on the bustle.
