Those who are fans of the Frisco EMD GP15-1s will be glad to hear Diesel Era magazine has started a series on this locomotive.

The current DE issue (Sep/Oct 2010, Vol 21, #5), which I received today, initiates Part 1 of the series. It covers details of the locomotive, and features the Chicago And North Western (C&NW) and Conrail GP15-1s.

Part 2 of the series will finish up the CR units, plus will cover those of the SLSF, and of the Missouri Pacific (MP or MoP) as well.

DE feature articles on locomotive types include many photos, some in color.

I would not be surprised if the Frisco coverage includes pictures of most, if not all, of the SLSF GP15-1s.

Thanks for the heads up, Ken.

The GP15-1 is one of my favorite locomotive models.

I will have to be sure and get a copy of these two issues.

Just picked up my September/October 2010 Diesel Era yesterday and it has an article on EMD's GP15-1.

This is part one and it includes units built for the CNW and Conrail. Part II will have units built for the Frisco and the MP. As usual there are lots of photos and some good background on the CNW and Conrail units. Looking forward to the next installment which should be out soon.

BTW there is an interesting article on the Tulsa-Sapulpa Union (TSU) Railroad included in this issue. Wish there had been more information on the railroad but the author did include present day industries served by the TSU.

Page 8 contains a photograph of Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway, GP50, number 5004

It was ordered by the Frisco. Former BN 3104 retired 1997. Sold to Indiana and Ohio (I&O), 3100 in 1999. Sold to CBNS 5004. Reassigned to IORY, 2001.

Has it really been that long since the GP50s were new?

I received my copy of the November/December 2010 issue of Diesel Era today (Vol 21, #6).

It contains the second installment of their EMD GP15-1 article series, but still no Frisco units.

This issue covers the GP15-1s from CR/NS, CR/CSX, and MP/UP. Nice coverage & pictures of the MoPac units. I did not realize that MoPac had the largest fleet of GP15-1s.

I guess we will have to wait until the next issue for the Frisco/BN GP15-1s.

Maybe just in time for shipment of the Athearn model?

I was looking at a photograph from Athearn of Frisco SLSF 100.

It looks like there is a bell mounted up high on the long hood fireman's side.

Hope they do not make the production units like that.

Finally but I guess you save the best for last.

Just ordered a CNW GP15-1 at half price from Overland.

Will use that little jewel on the CNW transfer run.

Boy that latest Diesel Era GP15-1 article was a let down.

The Frisco only got 6 pages of Mandarin orange and white.

Indeed, made me recall a very old advertisement, "Where's the beef?".

On the Frisco GP15-1s, were the rear steps different from the front steps?

I know that they were on the MoPac / UP versions.
