    Tim, Ken, and Dwain,

One learns something new every day.

Thanks for the clarifications. It is nice to have the hard facts rather than my erroneous conjecture!

Karl Brand once shared part of a Chicago and Eastern Illinois (C&EI) Railroad timetable from the Yoakum era that shows C&EI trains No 25-125, the Southern Illinois Express and No 126-26, the Northern Illinois Express, running daily between Chicago, IL and Cape Girardeau, MO.

I wonder if the C&EI trains would have shared the Frisco System "Union Station" at the foot of Broadway at Water Street, or if it would have stopped elsewhere?

    Guys,

Even up to 1950 the C&EI ran its "Whipporwill" streamliner all the way to Chaffee, MO.

It arrived in the early am and turned back to Chicago, IL. I remember seeing one timetable that showed that schedule, but it did not last long. The idea was to connect with the Frisco "Memphian" at Chaffee, MO. The C&EI train later turned at Joppa or New Vienna, Illinois.

My great-aunt told me that my great-uncle used to ride to work from Cape to Thebes on the train in the early 1900s. That would have to have been the C&EI or the Missouri Pacific (MP).

I am sure the C&EI would have used the Frisco station at Cape.

    I am sorry.

The C&EI streamliner was the "Meadowlark," not the "Whipporwill."

The latter ran from Chicago, IL to Evansville, IN, not Southern Illinois.

  7. Tim,

    Photographs #10, 11, 12, 18 and 19.

I have some really nice photographs of the Leaky Roof line and the Frisco between Springfield, MO to Clinton, MO line to trade with you.

Are there any good Cape Girardeau photographs of the Missouri Pacific (MP)?

    My e-mail address is below.

    Rodger,

Any chance that you would be willing to post your KCCS pictures.

There are a couple of us who would love to see them.

    Thanks

Several years ago, I went to an auction in Carthage, MO that had a sizable amount of railroad memorabilia.

Included were two wool blankets with stitching in the lower right hand corner as being from the St. Louis, Memphis & Southeastern, Cape Girardeau. I purchased one and a friend ended up with the other. If my memory serves me correctly, this should date to 1907.

Aside for a few minor moth holes, the blanket is in wonderful condition.

Upon return from vacation, I found a couple of dandy blog posts on the Southeast Missourian's "f/8 and Be There" blog by long-time staff photographer Fred Lynch.

The first one features a variety of pictures of school-aged children while taking trips on the railroad.

    http://www.semissourian.com/blogs/flynch/entry/48192/

It includes some good background photos of the Cape depot grounds, not to mention passenger rolling stock.

The other post is on the passenger depot itself, and includes one of the first interior photographs I have ever seen.

I think both of these will be of particular interest to River Division fans. Likewise, I think they will also have broader appeal to all Frisco fans.

    Best Regards,

Chris, your post prompted a thorough read of this entire thread.

My research has answered a number of questions.

    Regarding GE 44-ton locomotives:

    1) SLSF 5 was assigned to Cape for a period while it was still in its original blue and white with red trim scheme.

    http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/44-ton-4-through-8.342/#post-2837

After a nearly fatal accident on 12/15/1949 it was sold.

    2) SLSF 4 and SLSF 6 spent some time in Cape. SLSF 4 was leased from the Frisco by Marquette Cement while in black and yellow SLSF livery before they finally purchased their 45-ton locomotive.

    http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/44-ton-4-through-8.342/#post-2850

Marquette never owned a GE 44-ton locomotive, but the GE 45-ton that was painted to match the Frisco black and yellow scheme that SLSF 4 and SLSF 6 sported.

Houck owned railroads into and out of Cape:

    1) Southern Missouri & Arkansas (SM&A) - Ran from the base of Broadway at Water Street, then out to the Southwest toward Poplar Bluff, MO. Later the Cape Girardeau and Southwestern (CG&SW) before becoming part of the Frisco Hoxie Subdivision.

    2) Cape Girardeau & Chester (CG&C) - Ran from the stone depot on Independence Street just east of Frederick Street, west out Independence, on out through the Arena Park area, to Jackson, MO and ultimately just across the Mississippi River from Chester, IL. It later became the Cape Girardeau Northern (CGN), and was then purchased by the Missouri Pacific (MP).

    3) Cape Girardeau and Gulf (CG&G) - This line went south from the stone depot, across William Street, under Good Hope and Morgan Oak overpasses, then along the river into Illmo, east along the river and on around past Commerce, MO toward Sikeston, MO. Some of this track became part of the Missouri Pacific stun end branch spur that served industries in western Cape Girardeau.
