Does anybody know of any of the ex-ATSF cabooses that were painted into the Frisco Maintenance-of-Way silver-gray scheme? If so, which number(s)?

MKD edit 5/27/2024: No former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) steel cabooses were assigned to, lettered or painted for maintenance of way service on the Frisco.

The Frisco did assign several Frisco built wood side steel frame and underframe cabooses to maintenance of way or wrecker service. However, many did not see service as such. They were reassigned as an accounting move as replacement former all steel cabooses were entering service in 1971, often using the former wood side caboose four digit numbers.

Wood side cabooses were rapidly being removed from service, retired, donated, sold or scrapped.

Cabooses assigned maintenance of way numbers included the following.

    Caboose SLSF 1108 (108), renumbered SLSF 101142.
    Caboose SLSF 1118 (118), renumbered SLSF 101182.
    Caboose SLSF 1133 (33), renumbered SLSF 101113.
    Caboose SLSF 1139 (39), renumbered SLSF 101139.
    Caboose SLSF 1142 (112), renumbered SLSF 101142.
    Caboose SLSF 1145 (382), renumbered SLSF 101145.
Caboose SLSF 1147 (147), renumbered SLSF 101147. Not repainted silver.
    Caboose SLSF 1149 (2nd) (563, 1170), renumbered SLSF 101170.
    Caboose SLSF 1159 (59), renumbered SLSF 101159.
Caboose SLSF 1116 (133), renumbered SLSF 101166. Painted silver with yellow background coonskin herald.
    Caboose SLSF 1170 (563), renumbered SLSF 101170.
Caboose SLSF 1180 (80), renumbered SLSF 101180. Painted silver with yellow rectangle with black coonskin herald.
    Caboose SLSF 1181 (81), renumbered SLSF 101181.
Caboose SLSF 1182 (145), renumbered SLSF 101182. Not repainted silver.

Does anyone on this list know whether the roof walks were removed when the Frisco received the Santa Fe cabooses, removed immediately, or removed over time? If so, what was the reason for removal?

    Frank

MKD: Wood cabooses preceding them and clear-vision after them had roof walks.

The ex-ATSF cabooses that SLSF acquired were never rebuilt into CE-1 class cars by the Santa Fe. They were all sold to the Frisco as-built.
