I didn't have a clue where to put this. But the pictures are of a old Brake Sled, used at Cherokee Yard, in Tulsa, Ok. It was used for the "Hold Back" when classifying cars over the hump. This was used before the Frisco bought the SD 38's. It was last dated 12-31/1962.
Ok, I have to ask... Where and when were those pictures taken? Acording to Marre and Sommers Frisco in color (Morning Sun) there were three brake sleds used at Cherokee yard. There is a picture on page 31 of that book showing brake sled X-82. All three were aparently built from steam locomotive tenders. Paul
Paul, the pics were taken early March, 1998. The sled as far as I can tell is still where I took these pics all that time ago. Just drove by there a few days ago. It looked like it was still there. It's behind a building on Dawson Road, just east of Lewis.
I think at one time they used an ex 1500 or 4100 tender and I can't tell from the photos if it has 4 or 6 wheel trucks. It almost looks like an old auxiliary water car since I don't see any rivets.
It has been there for years. I have rerailed many cars out there many years ago and it was there in the 70's I do believe.
Dose anyone know who owns it now days? I may be interested in purchasing such a car for restoration. Ship it on the Frisco!!! Murphy Millican
Using my photo editing software I was able to bring out details in the darkness....those are three axle trucks under that sled!
I love it. Please make more pictures and post. Learn from my past mistakes. Get pictures of all sides if possible and - for modeling purposes - 90 degrees to the subject.
I'm going to be in Tulsa for Christmas and would really like to see this thing. Does anyone know exactly where it's located?
Re: Brake Sled X82 Folks - Just came across a drawing by Ray Bullock of Brake Sled X82 (also apparently used for the Cherokee hump at Tulsa) in the FMIG "Second Section" newsletters compiled by Dave Lindquist. I would still enjoy seeing one of these modeled someday! Best Regards,
Is X81 still in Tulsa? I still kinda wonder why it is there. I wish it could be restored by someone. It would look good at Route 66 park on a small display track, with a sign telling what it was for.
I don't know how I missed this info. when I read this post sometime ago, but I wanted to clarify the statement that these sleds were used before the Frisco bought the SD38's. While that is technically correct, it implies that they may have been used up until that time. I hired out in June of 1971 and the sleds were not in use at that time. We were using the FMs and I never knew anything about these brake cars until I saw it here at Frisco.org. I have no idea when they were discontinued. Terry
