Atlas has just announced producion of their Trainman Center Cupola Caboose painted and lettered for the Frisco. It will have an MSRP of $13.95 and will be available in one road # which is 162.

    The stock # is 39837.

    Here are the specifics:

    Crisply molded body detail
    Weighted, detailed underframe
    Equipped with AccuMate® knuckle couplers
    Window glazing

Here is the link to a photo of the model:

If anyone is interested they are also offering an undecorated version with an MSRP of $10.95. The stock # is 39800.

I might add that there is a thread over on the HO side where Ken W. (meteor910) has pointed out the similiarities between this caboose and the home built ones the Frisco acquired with the purchase of the NEO. He points out that the major difference is that on the model the cupola is slighty offset whereas on the prototype it was centered. This of course is not quite as noticable on an N scale model as it would be on an HO one. One could just change the road # and be good to go!

Is this model pretty close to a frisco caboose prototype?

    Thanks for your post!

According to fellow Frisco.org member meteor910 it is close to the three home built cabooses that the Frisco acquired from the NEO (Northeast Oklahoma).

Yes, except that the Atlas model is not a center cupola, but slightly offset to one end. Also - the steps are way different than the NEO cabs had. I'm sure there are other differences as well. I've not seen the model, just pics.

When did Frisco inherit these from NEO?

    Thanks,

The SLSF purchased the NEO on January 14, 1964.

    Ken

ps - The SLSF inherited four center cupola cabs from the NEO, plus three Alco S2's and one Alco S4.

I did find a brass n scale Frisco caboose on Ebay a few weeks ago - road #1247. Would this possibly be one of these Neo cabooses?

    Thanks again!

The NEO cabs in later SLSF numbers are a bit of an enigma. They were, I think, NEO 51-54.

On the Frisco, I have pics of them over time as SLSF 162, 163, 1110, 1111, 1157, 1162, 1164 and 1186. I have no idea which NEO number was which SLSF number, or witch SLSF number was renumbered into one of the other SLSF numbers.

I have no record of SLSF 1247 as being an appropriate ex-NEO cab number. That number was in the middle of the renumbered series of SLSF International Car wide-vision cabs.

    Pete,

Ken has provided some good information.

Recommend you use the search facility on this site to view photographs of both the NEO cabooses and the 1200 (former 200) series cabooses. There are a number of posts on both types of cars including different paint schemes.

There are 2 of the former NEO cars (in KS and MO) and a number of the 1200 series extended or wide vision cars (throughout the country) that you can visit. We are working to update this site with current specific street addresses and maps to where you can find each saved caboose.

Further, recommend you go the this site's Library link, The Interchange section, FMIG and All Aboard Newsletters, FMIG Newsletter topic (page 4) and look at FMIG Newsletter 36, March 1983. There is a great article on scratch building one of the NEO cabooses, including a parts diagram with measurements. Although the article addresses a HO model, the measurements can be converted to any scale.

Also, note that the Frisco used caboose car number SLSF 1186 twice. It first appeared on one of the former NEO cabooses, SLSF 1186 (1st). Later this car was retired and the number was reused on one of the express freight compartment with side door cabooses converted from a Howe truss boxcar, SLSF 1186 (2nd).

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    Mark
