Hello All, This may have been answered somewhere in the depths before, but I ran across a couple of Athearn cars that have the red window band, silver roof, and Texas Special script in black. Any prototype for that? Also, am I crazy, or have I seen a Frisco car with black window band and black roof? Thanks, Chris
Very late in the careers of those cars the roofs were painted black, I think mostly because it disguised engine exhaust. The window bands, ends and lettering were painted Pullman green which appears black in most photos. Con Cor and evidently Athearn (and maybe some custom painters) painted all those surfaces black. Thanks for the info...not sure how the Athearn cars ended up with a red stripe and black script, other than Athearn stock often was not quite “right.’——-having read down further, looks like the Sterling Price had silver roof and green script while in private ownership...don’t know if it appeared as such in service.
None of those cars had silver roofs while still in service or still had "The Texas Special" lettering. "The Texas Special" lettering was changed to just "Frisco" about 1962 or 1963. " Tom G.
