I have a few of the really nice Athearn Genesis TOFC flats and have had problems with them uncoupling with adjacent cars in a train. It appears that couplers sit way too high compared to other cars and my Kadee coupler gauge.

There appears to be no way to lower the coupler (sway type) box that I can tell sooooooooo has anyone out there experienced the same thing and how did you modify these neat looking cars.

    Thanks.

Rick - Have you tried any of the Kadee offset-shank couplers? They might just solve the problem.

Rick, use what is called "over set shank" couplers. basically its a normal coupler, but the shank is over the head dropping the height.

Looking at the KD website number 42 coupler is an over set shank version of the #5 coupler. And the 142 is an over set shank of the #148 coupler. If you haven't tried the whisker couplers I recommend them, that's all I buy any more. I think they work better than using that brass box spring you get with the #5's.

Hmmmm....you're right, they do sit high. Had only taken mine out of the box to admire and hadn't put them next to the gauge yet. You would think they could have gotten that right on a car that retails for 40 bucks. I hate the thought off using offset shank couplers on such a nice looking car although that looks like the easiest way to go. Was planning on putting some nice scale Kadees in there. At first glance it looks like you might be able to trim the bolster and the trucks to reduce the height enough and still have the wheel flange clear the bottom of the car. Just don't break off any of the nice details in the process.
