I just bought a Genesis 2-8-2 on Ebay last week and it runs great on my test track. I have a TCS T1 decoder on the way and will let you guys know how it runs on DCC. That headlamp is a bit hard to take and I'm not even a steam expert. The bell looked goofy even before I got my Frisco Power book out. However, it does run nice on DC and my unit came intact will all parts present and unbroken.

I was very happy to find this thread and read through it, especially Karl's advice on the replacement parts. Karl, you are a great American.

    Ship IT on the Frisco!

Rick, Just a couple of thoughts. While looking at the thread about the 4003, I noticed one other small detail, which was peculiar to the Frisco (and perhaps a few others), i.e., the placement of the air strainer/filter under the chin of the locomotive smoke box.

I have not seen the BL USRA 2-8-2 up close, and would enjoy hearing your thoughts....Athearn vs BL.

I believe that the Great American appellation should go to those who serve and have served in the uniform of our great country.

I like my Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 (although I like my Broadway Limited SLSF 2-8-2 with sound a little better) but the instructions do not tell you how to remove the body and install a decoder.

Does anyone on the site know how to get the body off so I can get to work on a decoder?

    Thanks.

Thanks Keith but this document tells you how to install the Tsunami speaker in the tender. I need to know how to get the locomotive shell off of the drivers/chassis to get to the motor connections. Any ideas on that?

    Thanks.

Rick, I learned from a gentleman who goes by Dr. Wayne on a different forum--the Gauge. http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110586

First, disengage the boiler braces from the sides of the smokebox, then remove the long screw that goes up through the cylinder block. Disengage the lower ends of the cab handrails, and then, using a small flat screwdriver, carefully spread, from the inside, the bottom front corners of the cab, and lift off the cab. Next, squeeze the lower rear end of the boiler between your thumb and forefinger, in order to disengage the tabs that protrude through the firebox, then lift. Continue lifting the rear of the boiler until it is high enough to clear the top of the motor (this is a tight fit). Now slide the boiler forward until it clears the front of the main boiler weight, and set aside. To remove the weight/motor/idler gear unit, remove the screws from both sides of the boiler weight (above the lead driver), and the screws from the motor terminals (bottom rear area of the motor). Lift off the entire assembly, feeding the "pigtail" through the slot at the rear (the small circuit board on the end of the pigtail must be removed to obtain enough clearance).

    Gary,

Thanks. This sounds like it will work. So far I have the cab off and the rear of the boiler apart from the firebox. Now if I can just slide it forward . . . . . . .

Who thought of this arrangement ?!?!?!?!?

    Appreciate your help.

    Samhongsa, I bet.

It's very tight, but it will come off.
There are a few appurtenances and details that you may wish to remove from the boiler, too, just so you don't break them while manhandling the boiler.

I haven't modeled much since the weather improved here (May); but my daughter wanted to play choo-choos Sunday Morning. I tried running the Athearn 2-8-2 and got frustrated all over again.
