In the picture they used of #103, the horn looks black, although it is because it is very dirty, and the Gyralight looks sort of silver, but it is a very dirty white. They did not pay close enough attention to the detail and I can't for the life of me explain the paint line. I am glad I chose not to order. Looking back at the production release pdf file, they clearly illustrated the model with the horns in black, Gyralight in silver, and the incorrect positioning of the lower red paint line. I have to admit that I did not look closely at the new release and compare to the previous release. Two photos in the Archive and on Condren's website of #103 reveal orange horns and a white Gyralight, although a third in the Archive shows a very dirty loco and the horns could be mistaken for black and the Gyralight is so dirty it could be mistaken for silver. http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...d-Missouri-on-January-2-1981-James-Holder.jpg http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...-location-unknown-possibly-in-August-1977.jpg http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...mith-Arkansas-on-June-13-1980-Paul-Strang.jpg The photos I have found of #107 seem to indicate that its horns were orange, and its Gyralight was most likely silver. http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...at-Springfield-Missouri-on-August-25-1979.jpg http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...15-107-location-unknown-in-September-1979.jpg https://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/dr0605/fr107.jpghttps://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/dr0605/fr107.jpg The two pictures in the Archive of #114 appear to indicate very dirty orange horns and a silver Gyralight. http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...ity-Kansas-on-December-21-1979-Jim-Wilson.jpg http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...ield-Missouri-in-January-1981-John-Benson.jpg https://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=443721 None of the pictures of the Frisco GP15-1s indicate a paint line where Athearn placed it on this run.
Well when you zoom in on the picture it does show the incorrect paint. I never looked that close at the release ad because I assumed they would get the most basic of details correct.
Keep in mind they are now a Horizon company. I’d keep your expectations close to the ground and spend your hobby dollars wisely and according.
I think we have sufficiently identified the weaknesses in this release, but I am not sure how to constructively get Athearn's attention. I offered to be the liaison between us and Athearn, but never got an acknowledgement from Athearn.
I sat out on the FP7's, but I've already sent a lengthy email about the GP15's. Depending on how they reply (if at all) will go a long way towards determining if I buy another Athearn product ever again.
Keith, you have my proxy. Your track record with the manufacturers is excellent. I've complained to the hobby shop I purchased mine from. Not sure if that will percolate up to the manufacturer. Jim
I dropped off my 3 units with UPS yesterday to be returned for a refund. I sent Athearn an email a week ago, and haven't gotten a response, so it's not looking good for them.
