    E8A SLSF 2010 - 1967

E8A SLSF 2010 and a sister roll by with a train of mostly head end cars.

    Slide is dated April 1967.

Location unknown, but is probably somewhere in Kansas.

    Photographer unknown.

Moderator: I am thinking southbound at Olathe, KS.

It was taken in the same location as E8A SLSF 2010 above.

Neat picture posted on this chat board sometime past.

Great location to shoot train photographs!

E8A SLSF 2010 "Count Fleet" and the Texas Special

Ken's New Year's Greeting got me to searching through the files.

Here is a company photograph of E8A SLSF 2010 "Count Fleet" and what appears to be the Texas Special.

The caption states Shrewesbury, MO July 1951.

    Happy 2010

I agree that it is the Texas Special.

End of car railroad ownership plates are on the RPO baggage combination.

    Nice photo, Karl.

It really emphasizes the gold-outlined-in-white stripes and how superior they were to the later plain yellow stripes, which were still a lot better than what came later.

Those monuments behind E8A SLSF 2010 "Count Fleet" visible as she pulls No 2 into St Louis' Lindenwood Yard are Laclede Gas Company natural gas holders.

Today the gasometer natural gas storage and system pressurization tanks are in the process of being removed.

Nothing is the same any more!

Wow, the last time we were even close to that area, we were hitting Ted Drewes during a visit in August.

Ted Drewes is a long time St. Louis area institution with great frozen custard! Since 1930 it is a must stop if in or passing through St. Louis. Really a great treat after railfanning during a hot and humid summer, or anytime really. Please see the following link.

    https://teddrewes.com/

It was nice to see the monuments still there in this photograph.

About the one part of the area I recognized from old photographs.

    Alas, no more.

    Best Regards,

Funny that they are tearing them down now.

When it seems we should be conserving, protecting and preserving natural gas! It would seem "natural" to use natural gas for the next generation of automobiles.

You could fill up your car at your home city gas meter. Storing and shipping natural gas would not be any more trouble than doing it with propane.

A natural gas bottle for your grill for the next tailgate party?

    Note to FriscoMike:

Should this be a "sticky" throughout 2010 so we can see Count Fleet and the Texas Special as we log in?

Just a suggestion. Some may get tired of it by June, though I doubt it.

Gasometers: These were regulators as I understand it, not storage. I am assuming the local gas company (Laclede Gas) has been using a better regulating technology for some time for they have been out of use for what seems like a couple years.

Also, they appear vulnerable to some kind of spectacular sabotage. That may be another reason for their replacement and removal.

They serve as both a storage surge for natural gas, and a big flexible void to keep the gas pressure constant.

The tank envelope rises and falls with the volume of gas stored in it, and helps always kept the gas main at a constant pressure because of its ability to smooth out pressure surges. Kind of like a water tower.

The "problem" is the USA has natural gas coming out the wazoo now, because of new discoveries, but mainly from significant new drilling technology.

So what do we do now that gas is plentiful?

Let's tear out all of our fixed surge storage!

Gas will always be plentiful, right?

If we have another major conflict like WW2, do not ask the railroads to haul all the stuff and people around like they did back then.

Just like the railroad, do not have the capacity, we tore it all out!

    Yeah Ken,

But it was neat when 911 happened that the railroads, Amtrak]albeit a mere shadow of itself, kept on running!

    Why cannot anyone ever learn?

That is a beautiful picture of E8A SLSF 2010.

I do not care what anybody says about Santa Fe's warbonnets, Southern Pacific's Daylight PA's, or any other unit, Frisco's E8As in their original scheme are the best looking passenger diesels ever.

    Period.

There is an interesting slide or picture of E8A SLSF 2010 Count Fleet posted on e-Bay. I do not know the lister. See #250593487312.

    http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...et-at-Birmingham-Alabama-on-April-20-1964.jpg

This "Racehorse" E8A is in all Dulux Gold trim, but the spark arrestors are gone or not yet mounted. The side skirts are gone. The silver trucks are filthy, yet the unit looks fairly good otherwise. It is carrying a Nathan 5-chime horn with three forward, two to the rear, not the usual all-five forward Leslie.

And, note how low the horse name is below the window - must have been a short guy doing the DuLux repaint job! I had not noticed that before on SLSF 2010.

When in its original gold and white striped livery, the Count Fleet name was in the correct position just below the window.

Still looks nice. Wish we could still see them.

When I first looked at the slide I thought the trucks had been painted.

E7A (EA7) SLSF 2001 looks to be in better condition.

    Ken,

The cover photograph on Frisco Southwest also shows E8A SLSF 2010s name painted lower than usual.

I never noticed that until you called it to attention.

    Tom,

    You are correct.

I checked several other pictures I have of E8A SLSF 2010 Count Fleet and note that in gold and white outline paint scheme, the horse name was up close to the window like it was supposed to be.

However, all the pictures I have of it in Dulux gold stripes & lettering show the horse name being much lower on both sides as we are talking about!

Most of the pictures show the normal Leslie horn arrangement, though. The Leslie must have gone bad and they had a spare Nathan 3F2R in the shop, so they put it on.

For the rest of its time then, I guess the "count" did not sound so melodious!
