I've got about 10 years of walthers and some atlas catalogs. Anyone collect a complete set or working on completing a set. I would be interested in knowing what years the various n scale catalogs began. I have an Atlas catalog from 1980 only a few pages thick.

    Tim -

Though I do not have a catalog collection, I have kept the very first Walthers HO catalog I obtained - the 1963 edition, cost $1. It's a riot paging through it and seeing the items that were available back then. Though there was some neat stuff - much of it rare items today, the selection is very limited compared to what we have available now, particularly for the Frisco.

Even so, Ulrich, Main Line, Varney and Silver Streak offered Frisco freight cars, and Walthers offered a Frisco passenger coach back then. A few years later (late 1960's-early 1970's) Athearn and Roundhouse started adding Frisco cars to their offerings. I recall my delight at seeing the Athearn "Ship it" 40ft box car kit in the hobby shop when we lived in Cincinnati.

I also have a few 1960's PFM and other brass HO locomotive catalogs around here somewhere as well.

I guess I do have a catalog collection in one area - I have mint issues of the Lionel catalogs from 1948 to about 1960 here as well - they are kept with my Public Timetable collection, which is pretty extensive for SLSF. As a kid in 1948, my dad got me my original Lionel set, which we added to each Christmas during the 1950's. I kind of lost interest in Lionel in 1961, when I became interested in the greater realism of HO. I built the Silver Streak HO MoPac drover's caboose kit (later decorated it Frisco - still have it), and I was hooked on HO.

Dad and I sold the entire Lionel collection in 1964 for $100. Dumb!!!!!

My father's estate has a complete Lionel catalog collection in it as well as an almost complete Ringling Brothers Barnum Baily Circus program collection in it. I am wrangling for both of these before my mother sells them all off.

Was there any n scale in 1963? I want to find those early years to try and track down as much as I can about the first trains produced, when, and by who. I just ordered Greenberg's n scale price guide and that should give me much of this information.

There is no N-scale in my 1963 Walthers catalog, only HO.
