Anouncing the Iantha Shop's Steam Rebuild Program

Here is the press report form the Iantha Branch President:

"Today I have decided to save a scrapped steamer. The shops will rebuild it and make it look like new. The engine number is 4031. It is expected to be done around Dec. 13."

Here is what is really happening: For my b day my parents bought me a genesis frisco 2-8-2. I will be running it on steam special freights. Eventually I might get passenger cars for it. At this time it is the only steam power I plan to get. The rest of the locomotives I buy will be O/W diesels.

I'm not rich enough for that.

 

It came in the mail today. I took it out long enough to test it before it was hidden. It ran good on DC. the poilet truck is springy. Going forward into a turnout curve derails it. And there was some growling, will that go away as I break it in? And I have a DS123 decoder I robbed from my failled attempt at installing DCC in a BB framed locomotive. Here's what I understand: it took the address program, but wont respond to it. What decoders do you guise use in it? I had thought about getting a reliable NCE decoder.

 

Well, today is Dec. 13 so that means it's my B day! I turned 14 today. And ofcourse I reseived my 2-8-2. I installed a TCS1 decoder and it runs good but my layout don't

Thanks. Acording to the ebay page it's brand new, but the box is faded a little bit. I have no clue why it's having problems. I have all the rails soldered (to a certain point) and it still wont run but on one part, and even parts of it stopped working.

How did you get the cab off of your Mike? I still can't figure it out. On the verge of ripping it off.

Here are a few pointers for you on DCC. Make sure all your feeder wires are soldered and operating well. This can be a chore, so take your time and test each section as you go with your locomotive. Second, take a track gauge around your track and make sure that none of your track is out of gauge. Be especially wary of the rail joiners to make sure that one hasn't rode up over the other. This could cause a derailment when the pilot hits the "bump" in the track. As for the brand of decoder, it is a personal choice, but Digitraxx is a very popular brand. If you haven't already, you need to dedicate a small spur as the "programming" track by insulating it from the rest of the layout and running a separate feeder to that spur. Doing this will allow you to program a locomotive without the possibility of affecting the other DCC locos on the layout. And for the growling, I use a good silicone grease on the worm gears and a drop of Labelle oil on the metal parts. These will break in with use, and if they don't then it is time to take it to the "bone yard" for inspection. Most of all, Have Fun!

Hope you are able to smooth out the laoyout issues. I'm thinking I might "Friscoize" my Mikado. By the time I finish mine, and am ready to run it, I'm sure that I'll have issues and questions.
