    Hello all.

Since my youth in the late 1960's I have been researching the 2-8-0s 76 & 77 as I was a member of the Muscle Shoals Club, later North Alabama Railroad Museum, when we bought 77 from the Mississippian Railroad and for a few years ran her in excursions on the Southern until in 1972 she broke the #4 driving axle while running at about 35 mph just between Wheeler And Courtland Alabama. Over the years I have collected many pictures of 77, some of 76 as she is a sister engine, mostly of her in service on the Mississippian. So far I have been unable to locate any of either engine in service on the Frisco. Recently in a Frisco employees magazine posted on the Frisco Archive there was a story about a Frisco engineer and his reliability record on the River Division and his assigned locomotive was the 76. There was a small poor picture of 76 with the article. It is my understanding from what I can find that 76 & 77 spent their Frisco career on the river division. The point of this "long winded" request is to ask if anyone has or knows of pictures of the 77 or 76 in service on the Frisco please let me know.

    Thank you all in advance

Good question, Robert. I've not seen any myself; the only photo of either locomotive I have outside of our Frisco digital presence is in Collias' Frisco Power; however, #77 is lettered for the Mississippian.

He did note that 76 and 77 both served out their Frisco days on what remained of their parent road, the Jonesboro, Lake City & Eastern. Considering the paucity of steam action photos from the "Bootheel Lines" area, it might be a tough item to find.

    Good luck, and best regards,

This is all I have found in my stuff so far. Interesting story about 76. My grandfather was on the track gang that removed the rails from Gulf Jct. to Bloomfield and beyond in the early 1930's. He told me they used the 76 for that project.

Hi I wondered if there was a general arrangement diagram or drawing of the 76 or 77 that gives the basic dimensions, wheel diameters and wheelbase and so on?

    Cheers, Ben S.

    Keep your fingers crossed, Ben.
Our resident encyclopedia hopefully will see your question later today, or soon.
If there is one- KARL will likely have it?

Hi Tim, yes, thank you. Very helpful. I think it shows the wheel diameter as 44" (rear drivers) or 51" (front set), which puzzles me. And another source said 48".

    Cheers, Ben

The driver center on all the drivers is 44” when the 3.5” tires are shrunk on the driver centers, the “real” driver diameter is 51”.

Ohhh, ok, Karl. So that means that over the wheel tread, it is 51" diameter ?
