When I logged on a while ago, amongst the random pictures that popped up was of one of the Meteor's streamlinine observation cars captioned as being shot at Birmingham?? Does anyone know why that car (which was always a staple of the St. Louis-Oklahoma route) was identified as being at Birmingham? My opinion: Is that the picture was actually mis-captioned and it's really not Birmingham but somewhere in Missouri or Oklahoma. Any ideas?

    Thanks, Tom G.

PS: That picture is also in the Frisco Archives (today, 2nd from the top).

Did you see Mark Davidson's reply on the archive? He says Oklahoma City...

I hadn't seen that post, thanks. I suspected someplace in Oklahoma.

She needs a good trip through the wash rack!
When were the two Meteor diner/observation cars square-ended?

Ken the cars were remodeled 2-60 (1551) and 11-60 (1550).

Darn! I arrived in Rolla to attend MSM in late August, 1960. If I would have been smart enough to catch #9 at the Rolla depot right after, I could have seen 1550 as a boat tail. I never did see either one of them in that configuration.

There was a steakhouse restaurant here in Springfield that was decorated in railroad kitch and one of the pieces was one of the original lighted Meteor tailsigns!!! The place went out of business after a couple of years and I think that when the place closed the sign could have been had pretty cheap. That was about 1962 or so. Wish I'd thought to inquire. Wonder who might have the piece now??

  8. I read about the Meteor diner/observation cars modified with square-ends.
Where can I find some pictures of those modified?
Squared off with end windows? Still an observation?
Squared off to be the same as a coach car?
    Other possibilities?

They were squared off for mid-train service.

After this rebuilding, they were diner lounge cars.

Many moons ago, I posted photos I took of both cars in November, 2001 here:
    http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/streamlined-cars.845/

Unfortunately, it is my understanding both cars are now gone.

I am too young to have seen these cars in service, but there are many other photos of these cars around.
