Caboose SLSF 1160

Discussion in '1100-1199' started by murphy millican, Mar 12, 2007.

  1. On my way to school to day I found out over the weekend a Frisco caboose numbered SLSF 1160 was moved to the Boys and Girls Club Goldtrap Center in Fort Smith, AR.

It is being restored for display. It is only one block from First Lutheran School where I go.

My friends and I are hoping that we could help restore her.

  2. The wooden caboose that has arrived in Fort Smith at the Goldtrap Gardner Boys Club, has the number SLSF 1160.

The car had been located in Memphis for several years. The number SLSF 1160 was on the car when it was donated to the park in Memphis back in the 1960s.

The new owners intend to restore the caboose to its original state using correct materials. There is no intention to ever place the car back on live rails therefore, the trucks, brakes, bearings, etc., will be restored as original. They want to restore it correctly.

Assistance has been requested for information from the Arkansas Boston Mountains (ABMT) Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) regarding this project. However, information seems to be difficult to locate due to the fact the number SLSF 1160 was probably not the original car number when it came out of production, supposedly in 1924.

Reliable information regarding materials and equipment on this car would be appreciated.

  3. I go to First Lutheran School in Fort Smith, AR. The caboose is only two block from my school.

I saw it today, it was solid white on one side and some windows were boarded up.

It looks good, but is it going back into a Frisco paint scheme?

I was also wondering if I could help with the restoration after school for an hour or so some days.

  4. Murphy,

I would suggest that you contact the Director of the Goldtrap / Gardner Boys Club regarding assistance in the restoration project, as he is in contact with the owner of the caboose.

As I stated, the intention of the owner is to restore the car to its original state, not necessarily compliant to today's requirements of FRA or Class I standards.

He thankfully wants the car restored accurately as a piece of history.

I would therefore assume that once the rotted wood skin has been replaced and repairs made, it will be painted back to the original Frisco color.

  6. I saw the article in the Times Record.

I was going to e-mail you this evening.

    Glad to see work started.

This is a fantastic original car.

I feel certain Mr. Goldtrap will do things right!

  7. Update on the caboose SLSF 1160.

The windows in the cupola have been replaced because kids at Chaffin Junior High have broken into the car numerous times. The side windows have been boarded from the inside and painted black. Yellow hand rails have been placed on all sides of the car. The end ladders need to be painted yellow or white.

Coonskin and number are still missing but it is a great work in progress. I bless who ever is restoring this beautiful car.

    Ship it on the Frisco!

    Any possibility of getting pictures?

  9. I have tried to get pictures to load.

I do not have the best internet connection, so it is hard to start a picture album on this platform. I do have a picture on my Facebook page. My name is listed as Murphy Zane Jenkins-Henson on Facebook.

I will try to post a link to the photograph later.

    Ship it on the Frisco!

  10. I am going to give it a shot with my new digital camera.

I took this shot last month after Christmas. I do not know if any progress has happened since but here it is, hopefully.

    Ship it on the Frisco!

    Murphy,

From a modelers point of view, that is a very nice shot - a straight on view.

Try and get the ends and other side as well - straight on. :)

SLSF 1160 is a Frisco built, steel frame and underframe, wood sided caboose. We could use good scale drawings of these cabooses.

Frisco built, steel frame and underframe, wood side, end cupola with straight side steel cupola cars from the SLSF 10-26 and 30-119 series. Constructed in 4 groups during 1938 (SLSF 10-26), 1940 (SLSF 30-40), 1942 (SLSF 41-99) and 1946 (SLSF 100-119) in their shops in Springfield, MO.

    Cars known to have been renumbered include SLSF 1100 (1st), 1103 (1st), 1104 (1st), 1106, 1107, 1108, 1109, 1112, 1113, 1114, 1115, 1116, 1117, 1118, 1119, 1120, 1121, 1122, 1130 (1st), 1131, 1132, 1133 (1st), 1134, 1135, 1138, 1139 (1st), 1140, 1142 (1st), 1143, 1144, 1146, 1148, 1149, 1154, 1155, 1159 (1st), 1160, 1161, 1163 (1st), 1165, 1167, 1168, 1171, 1172, 1173, 1174, 1176, 1177 (1st), 1178, 1179, 1180 (1st), 1181 (1st), 1183, 1185, 1186 (1st), 1187, 1188, 1189, 1190, 1191 (1st), 1192, 1193, 1194, 1195 (1st), 1196, 1197, 1198, 1199.

American Car & Foundry built, all steel, end cupola, former 1500, 1600 and 1700 series ATSF cabooses. The Frisco cars in these series were constructed in 1927, 1928 and 1929. These cars were acquired in 9/1969 (SLSF 1100-1105) and 1971 (nonconsecutive SLSF numbered cars noted below). These cars were intended as replacements for wood sided cars in local service.

    Cars known to have been renumbered include SLSF 1100 (2nd), 1101, 1102 (2nd), 1103 (2nd), 1104 (2nd), 1105 (2nd), 1128 (2nd), 1130 (2nd), 1133 (2nd), 1136, 1139 (2nd), 1141, 1142 (2nd), 1145 (2nd), 1147, 1152, 1153, 1159 (2nd), 1163 (2nd), 1164, 1166, 1170 (2nd), 1177 (2nd), 1180 (2nd), 1181 (2nd), 1182, 1191 (2nd), 1195 (2nd).

The former ATSF cars have sometimes been referred to in error as CE-1 or CE-2 cars. These class designations came into effect during the Santa Fe's caboose modernization program during the 1970s. This was after the Frisco acquired their cars. As a result, the ATSF would have retired and sold these cars before bearing these designations from the prior owner. Therefore, the appropriate designation for the Frisco's cabooses should be former ATSF class or series 1500, 1600 and 1700 cars.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    Mark

I measured the caboose SLSF 1150 in Osceola, MO on the old highline.

I made a model of it which I am pretty sure is in a The Meteor.

Whomever it was that wants to make a drawing of these Frisco cabooses, I can furnish the dimensions.

Keep in mind that this caboose has the side doors.

RCH (Ryan Harris) has the ability to create the drawings with CAD.

Richard, if you would send him a PM and let him know, he would probably help.

He is also looking for dimensional data for the bay window cabooses to do likewise.
