Frisco's "The Black Gold" train No. 517, southbound, headed by Diesel locomotive No. 2062 (edit: 2022?), arriving at Dallas Junction, which is the wye near Irving, Texas, on June 18, 1953.

The Black-Gold photo above is, I believe, actually headed by SLSF 2022. I had a good copy of this photo in a book (now gone, and I don't remember the title or author) which several of us looked over closely. If that is the case, I think this is one of the few photos of 2022 in its original name of "Middleground".

I think you are right. The caption is transcribed from the citation web site. If you follow the link, there is a higher resolution picture. Added edit to 2022.

I was unaware that the 5 chime air horn was in use at that time - 1953?
For some reason I thought they came later.
Can Someone fill me in on this?

Hmmmmm - good point Sherrel ! I don't know when the Frisco replaced the single Leslie "blat" forward horn with the five-trumpet/all forward Leslie mount, easily seen in the pic. SLSF 2022 "Middleground" was wrecked by the collision with the Katy in Ft Scott in 1950, just six months or so from its date of beginning service. EMD rebuilt it, and the Frisco renamed it "Champion". It was back in service late 1950/early 1951. Were the multiple forward Leslies being installed by then? Don't know, but tonight in a quick search, I was not able to find one on a dated photo of that time frame.

Unless I'm thinking of another, but similar pic of 2022, we might be wrong in our guess of the name. The posted photo is described as being in 1953. That is well into SLSF 2022 "Champion's" time!

I did a lot of VERY informal research from photos and I believe that the multi-chime horns were installed about 1952. There wasn't anything scientific at all, just me looking at photos.
