Any of you rock hounds know what makes up a good modeling match for red clay soil in Arkansas? I looked at Woodland Scenic but the closest they have is iron ore red. Maybe half iron ore red/half a something brown? I want to make up a batch for the roads on the Pokey...Here is a website of what I'm looking for http://www.jwjrocks.com/?p=840 Roger
Barite from Washington County Missouri is relatively soft (easily crushed into powder) and has the reddish color you are looking for. http://www.virtualmuseumofgeology.com/uploads/9/9/0/1/9901881/8265765_orig.jpg
Let us know what you come up with. Once upon a time, as a teenager with a layout; I took said red clay from our dirt basement, dried and ground it into fine granules and glued it to the model's embankment with carpenters glue. It looked halfway decent from a few feet away. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the polaroids of that part of the layout survived.
