I have used Microscale no. 87-85 for HO scale units. For N scale, use Microscale no. 60-85. You can order direct from their web site http://www.microscale.com Keith Edgington
In the past I've also used the 87-85 set, but now that Oddballs is dead... what do you do for stripes?
Check out the Microscale site and look for the section on stripes. There are a couple of railroads with barricade stripes that might work for the nose along with several different widths yellow straight stripes. You might be able to make some of these decals work. I can't speak to the color between the different decal sets or how they match up with the Frisco yellow, but you might be successful. Terry
Smallest Microscale yellow stripes in 45 degree is 8" wide in both HO and N scale. I don't know what 8 N scale inches would measure in HO scale, but I suspect about 6"? Still too wide for Frisco stripes, as I recall. With the loss of Oddballs, and Walthers no longer making decals (their old yellow safety stripes were too wide, but back then no one had anything better!) there's really no other options for the stripes.
I found Richard Napper's write up on "Frisco Geep's". He used Microscale # 85 for lettering/numbers and # 181 for stripes. One more thing, in need a number for a GP7 in Bham in 1950-51. Any ideas?
Those engines were shuffled all over the system, you couldn't be certain of which units were stationed where unless you could find a photo. Tom G.
Well, if you are going to be that specific with regard to the time frame, then you couldn't use anything in the 606 - 632 series, since they didn't arrive on the railroad until 1952. Otherwise like Tom said....just pick a number you like.
Hi Jason: Was the article more specific with a complete number? Searching through the Microscale online catalog, I find several sets that end in 181, the closest could possibly be the N scale Katy green/yellow stripes set. However, as printed, they have the wrong angle on the chevrons. I think the Frisco's were 90 degree chevrons?
If your geep will be pulling passenger trains, you'll want to pick one with a steam generator. That information is in Marre's Frisco Diesel Power. Sorry I don't have my copy handy right at this moment... Tom G.
I was using Herald King decals for the nose stripes with success. Since I'm unable to find those specific decals anymore, I got two different Microscale decal sets- 87-91156 (8" yellow stripes, yellow) and 87-582 (D&H Diesels, 1978-1985). Just by eyeballing, the stripes off the D&H set look closer to scale width.
I looked in Marre's Frisco Diesel Power for the Frisco GP-7's that were equipped with steam generators: --500-514 --557-572 --598-612 Tom G.
I'm not sure I understand your post, Tom. The GP7s ran from 500 - 549, 555 - 632. 550 - 554 were Alco RS-2.
