I read somewhere else that on this day in 1965 the Meteor made its final run.

So did a lot of other trains including the Sunnyland, Kansas City-Florida Special and Will Rogers.

When the dust settled, we were left with the Southland and the Oklahoman, period.

9/18/1965 was a sad day indeed for passenger travel on the Frisco.

I just recently received a Chaffee "Signal" weekly newspaper from this era that has front page coverage of the last "Sunnyland" to arrive in and depart from Chaffee on the River Division.

I'll try to scan it, but it did note that extra coaches had been added to that day's consist.

Whatever this link is (a newspaper article, I guess), I get a malware warning from Google Chrome.

Frisco sadly pulled out of the Dallas/Ft. Worth passenger market rather early.

The St. Louis Southwestern (SLSW) or Cotton Belt followed suit in the mid-50s. One by one, railroads in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex dropped their trains as well. At 40 and counting, Amtrak continues to prove that there is a need for long distance passenger service.

It is time for a album sized book on Frisco passenger trains. A real honest to goodness book printed on paper from Southern forests and printed in the USA!

Here are the pictures from the last southbound Sunnyland out of Chaffee. They are from my website page.

The link above is from my website. The link works great in Internet Explorer. I won't allow the trashy Google Chrome on any of my computers, too buggy.

    Nice picture.

The fellow on the left was my great uncle and engineer Henry Heeb. To his left is Cliff Pobst.

I recognize the gentleman to the far right, but can't recall his name.

    Tad,

    Welcome to the group.

Always good to see others with River Division connections. I have a similar black/white photo of this crew in the copy of The Signal that came out the week after.

Got it from my Grandparents after they passed away.

    Best Regards,

Finally dug out this paper again.

The caption of the newspaper photo indicates that this could be either James A. Barnes or Bob Nothdurft.

I'm posting the photos and accompanying 9-23-1965 article here.

    The Sunnyland (807/808)

    Best Regards,
