For the DCC users here in your opinion how important it to use decoders with constant speed stabilization
or back EMF? Would it be worth replacing my existing DH123PS decoders with ones that offer
back EMF? Most of these are installed on Athearn RTR units so I wonder if the performance gain would be worth the effort and expense?

I don't understand much about BEMF but the TCS decoders seem to give a really smooth speed curve

Howard, I would switch to a decoder with a good Back EMF algorithm. It will allow your locomotive to creep at a nearly indistinguishable speed. One of the locals here claims that the best Back EMF algorithm will require driving pins next to the locomotive to see that it is creeping along.

I highly recommend the Soundtraxx Mobile decoders or Tsunami sound decoders. They feature what I consider the best BEMF available, their mobile decoders are price competitive, feature excellent lighting options and the braking function just as their Tsunami sound decoders do.
