All these photographs are from the collection of Bud Laws and are used by permission.

Also, most of these images have written details about the particular locomotive.

But I have misplaced the file that lists the details. I will revise these if I find the file.

Note that the photo of 0-6-0 SLSF 3747 appears to be at the Springfield depot.

Note the "Lipscomb" sign on the elevator in the background.

    Best Regards,

I remember as a youngster, a long time ago, the 0-6-0 SLSF 3736 and SLSF 3737 were in service at Ft. Scott, KS.

    A question.

Were these 2-6-0, 2-6-2, 2-6-4 or other wheel arrangements before they were 0-6-0 configurations?

I would like to know what kind of switching locomotives these were.

As far as what would they really pull, could they switch 100 cars at a time?

They look like little brutes, small drivers, I bet they were just a wheel slip waiting to happen.

    Tom,

All were built as 0-6-0 switchers.

The tractive effort ranged from from about 28,000 lbs to about 33,000 lbs.

Depending upon grades and curvature that is 20-50 cars at 40 tons per car.

Their Factor of adhesion ranged from 4.26-4.60, so they were very sure-footed critters.

    Karl,

How did they compare to the 3600s - in particular the SLSF 3671-3675 and SLSF 3676-3695?

The 0-6-0 SLSF 3695 is my favorite little critter.

It was sold to Scullin Steel and sitting here at the NMOT since 1956.

Unfortunately, it receives now no love and care it seems.

    Ken,

Most of the locomotives from the 3600 series of 0-6-0s ante-date the Memphis Road merger.

The series is comprised of locomotives from several of the Frisco’s antecedent roads. Many of the locomotives in this series were sold or put to the torch before the 1920s. The 3698 was a 0-4-0, and the 3699 was a 0-4-2. Both were built for the Birmingham Bely Railway (BBRy) as that road’s number 5 and number 1, respectively.

I believe that this class of 0-6-0's was the first class of switchers on the Frisco to get its firebox above the drivers, and therefore enjoy a larger grate area. This class utilized a crown bar firebox, which reduced boiler circulation and caused increased scaling. It was not used much (on new locomotives) after the turn of the century.

The Memphis road was absorbed into the Frisco during 1901, and these 10 switchers were placed on the KCFS&M books. One year later, the Frisco would purchase 10 more identical locomotives (3686-3695). Note the changes that were made to the tender.

This class was identical to the 3676-3685 class 0-6-0s, which were purchased by the "KCFS&M" a year earlier. The 3695, which resides in the MOT in St. Louis has KCFtS&M on its Hancock number plate.
