I have a photo of my grandfather in 1926 (a group photo of the north shop roundhouse) on the Frisco 4136. I thought I might model it, though I do not know the history or where it went. Does anyone know a close model or any history. I really can not see the engine well in the photo. Thanks for any help you might give. William Jackson
4136 would be a 2-8-2 mikado, if memory serves it was a light mikado. I'm not a steam expert so I will let someone with more knowledge fill you in on the history of the locomotive. As far as models of this series of this engine, Athearn Genesis made a model of this series a while back. They produced 4030 and 4031. This of course was an HO model. I have 4031 and I have to say if you just want it as a display model it would be fine, but these ran into some big problems. The gears messed up on some of them and disassembly and getting parts was a problem and then there was also the issue of wires breaking off inside. Both of the pickup wires broke on mine so I tried to make tender pickups, but that failed miserably. Now it sets there. I think you would be better off starting with another model. I'm not a steam expert so I will let someone with more knowledge fill you in on a model that would make a good starting point. Ethan

4136 was a heavy mikado and was from the "middle" series of 4100s, 4135-4149 and was built concurrently with the 4-8-2 series 1515-1519 and used many interchangeable parts, such as stacks, domes, cab and tender among others. You can't get there by starting with a light 2-8-2 such as the Athearn Genesis. The boiler is too small. If you want to approximate one of them in plastic, you should probably start with a BLI USRA heavy 2-8-2 bearing in mind you will need to change the cab, domes and add air reservoirs on top of the boiler and change the running board configuration and find a Santa Fe 12 wheel tender. It would be a good project and teach you a lot about building, detailing and following a prototype. Here is a shot of the 4135.

During the late twenties and very early thirties, the 4136 worked from Springfield to Newburg, from Springfield to Thayer, and from Ft Scott to Afton, from Ft Scott to KC and from Ft Scott to Springfield. It appears that it made trips between Amory and East Thomas. It might be safe to interpolate that it spent much of its time handling freights between KC and Afton and KC and Birmingham. Strangely it shows up on freights working toward Texas out of West Tulsa.
Karl, thanks for your input. The photo that I have is 8/26, so that makes a lot of since. It's of the North shop Springfield. 4136 is on the Turntable. I recall my grandmother telling me that grandpa used to get called when they had trouble, he used to catch the train to Newberg to work on the engines. He was a Boilermaker. Thanks Bill Jackson
