Does anyone have any pictures of trains travelling on the old Salem Branch?

This particular line has always been of interest to me, but information and pictures seem to be scarce. I have one, a small freight consist pulled by a single Burlington Northern GP38-2 (former Frisco No. 698) taken in the summer of 1984, one of the last, if not the last, train that was ever run on the line. The picture was taken in Wesco MO. I also have a photograph of the Wesco depot taken in the 1920's. I would like to post these, but I don't have a scanner at this time.

If anyone has further information on this line or the Cherry Valley and Sligo and Eastern, please e-mail me.

    Notes
    1) East End (Rulon), MO is a village in the West end of Iron County, about 1/4 of a mile northeast of the junction of Missouri Highways 32 & 49. The first names applied to East End were Goodwater and Goodland. Goodwater was on the north side of Missouri Highway 32 and Goodland was on the south side. In 1912, the railroad reached the town. This was the east end of the Sligo & Eastern RR, thus the town was renamed East End. In 1929, the construction of Missouri Highway 32 began, Highway 49 was constructed later. Sawmills sprang up overnight. After the logs were sawed into lumber, the roughage was used to make cordwood. In 1929, the railroad was abandoned because there was not enough timber left to make the railroad profitable. Today at East End, there is a store and three houses.
    2) Rails removed Winter 1932-33.

    3) Sligo, MO was established in 1880 by a group of New York capitalist headed by Edward F. Goltra. It was located in the extreme northeastern corner of Dent County. For 42 years the furnaces of Sligo belched their sparks of steel from flames fed by the woods of the neighboring hillsides.
Over this time Sligo & Eastern Railroad used Shay type, featuring geared drivers driven directly from its cylinders, wood-burning locomotives to haul that fuel. It was often found necessary to extend its tracks as the timber supply disappeared.
About 1900, the business of iron was no longer profitable. Sligo became the possession of the American Car & Foundry (ACF) Co. in 1901. The last glowing bar of iron was removed from its furnace in 1921. It was these owners who abandoned the Sligo & Eastern Railroad.
What ever remained was sold for scrap around 1932 or 1933. The last crew included engineer, Bud Jamison, fireman Cubert Satterfield, brakemen Everett Chapman and Walter Ferrell, conductor Louis Jamison and roundhouse Master Machinic, Hiney McGinnis.
The giant furnaces, charcoal kilns, machine shops, roundhouse and the old hotel - are all gone. Once with a population of 4000, Sligo had diminished into a village of 4 or 5 houses.

    Salem Branch and the S & E

    Roger,

Thanks for the extra info on the Salem Branch and the S & E.

I found it very interesting, and I no idea that the line ever went past Buick. In many places, you could never tell that a railroad had passed through the region, for the old roadbed is overgrown with vegetation, and much of it has disappeared into the earth.

A local history book that I have states that the Sligo and Eastern used a Shay locomotive on the line, although photos at the Dillard Mill historical site show a conventional steam engine, I believe a Mogul type.

I have never heard of a Shay operating on the Frisco, so I was wondering if someone else had ever heard of this before?

    Thanks again,

    Patrick

Attached is a map of the area discussed in this thread. It is part of a map of Missouri published in 1905. Many of the towns listed have disappeared.

    Thanks for the map!

Question: What lines radiated out of Lead Jct.? (To what towns?) The map doesn't show Lead Jct.

Lead Junction didn't enter the Frisco lexicon until the Lead Line was built.

Hmm. Guess I was misunderstanding the 1873 build date for Lead Jct. in the above station list.

Re: Lead Junction to Buick, MO Stations and Mileposts

Thanks for posting this, Karl. Very interesting to see the Sligo and DeCamp branches still on the timetable in 1933. I thought both had been abandoned around 1929 or 1930. My grandfather was part of the crew that took up both branches. On the DeCamp branch, he talked of riding in a gondola as the engineer tried to work the train up a grade. He couldn't quite make the hill, so he would back the train down to the bottom, then get another run at it. He did this several times before he finally got the train over the crest. I had a similar experience on the Central Midland last November when we had a skiff of snow on the rails. We were heading east and couldn't quite make the hill at Tavern Rock, milepost 38. I rode in the "cage" of the last car, a CMEX covered hopper, so that I could protect the point while we backed down the hill to St. Albans. We finally made it after three tries, and although I was glad when we did, it was a neat experience.

I am quite sure this has been covered, but what railroad guy's refer to as the Lead Line (lead Jct. to Viburnum) must have been built sometime in the 50's. I have worked on it several times, but really didn't pay too much attention to the history. I am liking to read these posts, and recall some of the old heads talking about the construction. I picked up scrap on the line with a American Crane, carried out some of the crystal rock, which used to be all over the ditches. I still have a couple of pieces in my flower beds, that has moved with me over the years. This is really a neat line as is the Ft Wood Branch, anyone who gets the chance to see them or ride down the line, well its, worth the trip. I have been over lots of track, but this is some of the most scenic.

It was built during 1967. Some of the rail came from the KC Sub East Main when it was retired.
