    Hi Y'all,

As you may know, I have loved steam since I was a little kid. Therefore, the San Antonio de Bexar Railroad Company will be heavily divested in steam.

I am starting my first locomotive. It is a older Mantua metal boilered/cab 0-6-0 and I am getting all build parts to make her look like the SLSF 3653.

The boiler will receive all new steam and sand domes, bell, generator, stack, and headlight. I have the steam chests off of the old Mantua 4-6-0 Rodgers that I am using to replace the compound units. The cab will probably be replaced with the Mantua Mogul plastic cab as it may be more prototypical then the short metal cab.

I am in the early stages of gathering the parts and intend on doing a complete build thread. Mind you, I will get her as close as I can. With Frisco building their own steam locomotives, it is a challenge, and a welcomed one, to replicate.

I have secured not only the right steam chests, but have gotten the correct sand domes and stack for the 3653. The steam chest will allow me to run the Stephenson Valve Gear with the Laird style cross-heads.

I will be using a Dremel tool to take all the cast on pieces off. I'll be getting the correct air compressor, reverse and all piping. I'm going to do my best to replicate this locomotive as best as I can. If anyone has a picture of the fireman side of 3653, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Those pics sure bring back memories! I built one of those Mantua "Big Six" 0-6-0's back in the early 1960's, with the valve gear option. I did it as SLSF 36something or other; it was not prototypically correct, but to me it sure looked great. Plus, it was my first HO locomotive built from a kit. And, it ran pretty well!

The coonskin on the smokebox was cut out of a Frisco matchbook cover. It said FRISCO instead of the road number, but I didn't care.

Years later, in a weak moment (Kurt sure did eat a lot of formula!), I sold it. I've often wondered if it still exists. Alas - the kit is no longer available.

I am very interested in your progress on this project. A smaller 0-6-0 than my USRA's would be more appropriate for the West Bottoms. How are you going to repower this locomotive? Decoder?

Please post lots of photos. I am sure many of us are interested in this project.

I'm a big believer in pics, so dial up guys be warned...

I've already started collecting the necessary parts. This will be my first kit bash in over 20 years. I'm excited to do it. I would appreciate any constructive criticism.

I have 2 pics of other 0-6-0's on the fireman's side of that class of 0-6-0.
I hope this will help you. You may be just helping me, with my 0-6-0 kit bashing as well.
I have a few Mantua and Roundhouse 0-6-0's. I'm working on a layout of the Birmingham Belt RR in Bham AL, 1940's-1950's.
Good luck to ya. Keep us all updated.

Manny, your work awaits. Like the others, I'll be interested in following your progress. First, you'll need to change out the piston valves for slide valves.

At least the cross head guides are correct as is the even driver spacings.

I started a similar conversion using the MDC kit many years ago. I got the tender done. If I can find it, I'll post a photo or two. I built the coal hopper upper extension of brass with brass also for the supports.

I started on the cab when interest waned.

The steam chests will accept the cross head guides for the Laird which are the correct style. I wish I could use the full valve gear as I love all the motion, but to model the Frisco's 0-6-0's, the majority (all but 3800's) had simple Stephenson's.

I'm going to regear and have a can motor with flywheel, DCC and sound. I've been doing a lot of research and finding that most if not all steam kit mfg's are now OOB or discontinued. Bowser discontinued all Cary steam locomotive boilers. I spoke with them this morning. This sucks. Put a real damper in my spirit this morning. RTR is nice, but the hobby is about building, not just buy and run.

Hit the Frisco Coonskin Headlight Bracket Jackpot!

I was cruisin' on eBay tonight for the Frisco goods when up came an auction for six (6) Kemtron Frisco Headlight Brackets w/coonskin. I didn't even hesitate. I snagged all six! Each one was $2.99. Not bad. My locomotives are coming in! The SABRR is growing!

The SABRR has taken delivery of three Baldwin Class 0-6-0's from various roads and will begin shortly to completely rebuild these locomotives. Here are some pictures of the new additions to the short line.

Joined with these locomotives is a new Alco 0-8-0 switcher dedicated to yard and local service.

    More to come...

Just to let you know, the Frisco never owned any 0-8-0s, but refer to rule one: it's my railroad!

They didn't need them since they had so many small-drivered 2-8-0's. However, there's a famous BLW builder's photo of a C&EI 0-8-0 in Frisco lettering - during the 1900-1913 Yoakum era. There's another of a C&EI 4-4-2 lettered for Frisco.

Anything goes - there's even evidence of a 0-6-0 tank switcher used in a shop somewhere.

Yes, I knew that the Frisco didn't have any 0-8-0's but the P2K's are too nice to pass up. I'm going to do my best to make my locomotives look as close to Frisco prototypes as possible, however, since the Frisco made their engines, with a few exceptions, that will be almost impossible to do.

I am ordering a whole bunch of parts from Yardbird Trains for the 0-6-0's. I'm undecided if I want full working valve gear on a few, or just the Stephenson simplistic. Watching valve gear work on a steamer is awesome and they just seem naked without them.

On the 0-6-0 that has single steam chests, I will do Laird and no valve gear.

I'm afraid that the liberty of a fictional road will have to rear its head. :D

Oh yeah, the SABRR will also have small Prairies. Love the 2-6-2's.

I picked this lil' gem up but I'm not sure if it looks right behind the 0-6-0. The problem I'm running into is finding consistent tenders for the same class locomotives. I'm also thinking that this tender should go behind my 4-6-2 that I'm building on a Mantua frame but a Cary Boiler. Yet is it too small for that locomotive? Ugh!

I'm in the process of collecting all the brass pieces to add onto this engine. Soon construction will begin. I'm waiting on my pieces from Yardbird Trains.

I think the tender looks slightly big for the loco, but hey it's your railroad, do as you please. I do as I please on Iantha Branch :D Who knew late 70's power would mix with steamers?

That looks like the United/PFM tender from their Russian 2-10-0 Decapod model.

In any event, too big for a tender behind a Frisco 0-6-0. Would look good behind a 2-8-0, or obviously, a 2-10-0, however. Maybe even a 4-6-2 late in its years. But, the arch bar trucks would have to possibly go.

    Hey Ken and Iantha,

Yes, it is a PFM tender! I was told it was a B&O but you could have fooled me! Both of you are right. I looked at it and thought it was too big. I think I'll save it for one of my Pacific's or Prairies. If I find a Mellor kit, then I'll use it behind a small 2-8-0 or 2-8-2.

Trying to find tenders consistent is very hard. I'm looking at trying to get the parts to build these from Mantua:

I think I can build up out of brass or styrene a coal bunker that looks like
    the 3653's

Does anyone have the drawing for this class locomotive? If I had the schematics for the tender, that would help me a lot!!!

    Thanks!

If it's any help, I believe Bachmann sells their tenders separately. Maybe you can use on of theirs??
