Neat pics! The SLSF 1350-1356 2-8-2 rebuilds from 2-8-0's were unusual looking but I guess they worked fairly well. The external Coffin feedwater heater gives them an unusual look for a Frisco locomotive. I recall Joe Collias describing these in a presentation saying that this class of Frisco Mike wore a Grandmother's "shawl" over the smokebox. Ken
Darn, where were these overhead views when I was building mine? I wonder if this engine is still over in Taylorville, IL? Anybody heard lately?
The appliance salesmen went home happy after these rebuilds. These locomotives seem to have it all.... Coffin FWH, Coffin Superheater, Hanna Stoker, Smoke Consumers (visible in left side firebox shot), Locomotive Valve Pilot, Thermic Syphons, Booster Engine. I don't know why the Frisco didn't nudge the BP just a tad. With a BP of 195 psi, they had a factor of adhesion 4.23. Goosing the BP by 5 or 10 psi would have have increased TE without making them too slippery.
Hey Don, I checked a Christian County website, and they show 1352 stored at the Illinois Midland enginehouse. [ 3rd and Clay streets] The wife has cousins there, so a road trip to check it out could be likely! Dan
Re: SLSF #1352 sad situation Hi gang, We went to Taylorville, Ill. today, and I about had a heart attack!! 1352 is in terrible shape. The tender is separated from the loco, stored outside, and the engine is in an old shed, the door is missing on one end. The smokebox front has been removed, the piston rod covers are gone, and rusty might as well be its new name. Everything is behind a locked fence, so a closer inspection was not possible. I went to the Historical Society, and I was given a name of the supposed owner. I am going to try and find him and contact him, to see whats up. I will post some photos when they get back from the " soup" Dan
Dan, the engine is in the process of being bought for restoration to operate. Check this web site: http://www.americansteamrailroad.org/
Thats great news, Don. I sure hope that its true. From the looks of it today, nothing much has been done. I am also surprised that the Historical Society knew nothing of it. Well, we can hope that 1352 is on its way to restoration. Dan
If you go to their website you will see they have only raised $3,500 with a goal of $750,000. They have their work cut out for them for a long time to come. Don’t get me wrong I would love to see it running, I just think it may wind up some like other projects that have started and never been finished. Steve
Boy, I hope they get it going. She sure looks forlorn right now. Here are the photos I took last weekend. Dan
Like all projects it looks worse then what it is. Inspections have proven she is not beyond repair or out of reach of being fixed. Just that she is all tore down so the looks of locomotive are not there but like any project it does not happen over night. I could post pictures of 1522 when we had it disemboweled restoring her and make your blood curdle. Big piles 'o parts! Look how she wound up tho.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Harvey this past Thursday at Owosso. If this project succeeds it will be with the efforts of this young man. He's outgoing, dedicated, energetic and enthusiastic. He shared with me that testing the firebox and boiler showed the sheet metal to be in great shape. I think this project is a worthy cause to support in order to preserve a part of the Frisco history and legacy. The project is in its infancy but just wait to see what happens... Thank-you Ed it was a great pleasure meeting everyone at Train Festival. Please consider helping our cause by donating online at www.americansteamrailroad.org this is our only project and all proceeds even in this tough ecomony go to this project and can be taken off of your taxes. Steven Harvey
An article in the October, 2010 issue of Trains magazine explains the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association's efforts to move SL-SF 1352 from Taylorville, Illinois to Columbus, Ohio. -Rich
