Frisco get together in Pittsburg, Kansas??

I posted this on the Frisco Yahoo Group and would like to hear any comments, questions or suggestions from this group. Also, anyone want to help??

To everyone who has been talking about a historical society or a
    Frisco get together:

For those who might be interested in starting a group or for
those who would like to see a Frisco get together, I would like to
volunteer to host an event here in Pittsburg, Kansas. I know that
Pittsburg is not a large community, but we are centrally located for
the Frisco and we are only thirty miles from Joplin, Missouri which
has many hotels and places to eat along with shopping for wives. I
think I can get a free place to meet and possible help from the local
convention and visitors bureau. The meeting place would be in the
basement of the Watco Companies headquarters. It has been used for
the Missouri Pacific Historical Society and the KCS Historical
Socities conventions within the last few years. The owners of Watco
are very interested in the preservation of our railroad heritage and
as an employee, I am pretty sure I can get the facilities donated for
a weekend. We can hold around 150 people and tables and chairs are
on site. The only bad thing is that you have to go down at least on
set of stairs to enter. I am also a board member of the Heart of the
Heartlands Railroad society and would probably be able to get their
help in organizing activites such as a tour of our museum and
depots. We might even be able to get a train or motorcar ride over
former Frisco track. We could also have slide and multi-media show.
We also might be able to get a module layout to set up. I'm not sure
for this type of meeting if I can set up for many vendors. I am
willing to help get things started but I will need some help.

Let me know if this is of interest to anyone.

    John,

Hey, I missed the last get together in StL and Pittsburg is close to KC so I am in if the dates work out.

I can bring slides and models if needed. It would be great to see what everyone is working on so a slide presentation of those layout owners who are willing would be very interesting. We would need an LCD projector though.

I would like to see someone research the SLSF in Pittsburg and do a clinic on that. Mark Davidson is the best SLSF research dude I know and we might talk him into something. We could even tour the town and see where the Frisco used to be and the customers it used to serve.

Let me know if I can help.

    Ship IT on the Frisco!

When will this be? As long as it's not next weekend or March 13- about 22 I should be able to come. It sounds interesting.

Count me as interested dependant on date/time! Thanks very much for the offer, John.

I might be interested, but it will depend very much on timing. I would basically have to do it on a break between semesters.

Sounds good! We should try to nail down specific dates as soon as possible.

Perhaps the thing to do is to select two or three possibilities, then see which ones work the best for the most people?

So that we can give more of a lead time to get the details worked out and the word out, here are some possible dates. Let me know if these sound o.k. and give me your preference. I know that we will not be able to satisfy everyone, but we will try.

    All dates are Saturday/Sunday.

    Sept. 12/13
    Sept. 19/20
    Oct. 17/18

    John:

You might want to look and see when Pittsburg State has hokme football games if you already haven't. They might not be posted yet, but if you choose one of those weekends that there is a football game, especially homecoming, the only available hotel/motel rooms may be in Joplin. Also, if the October weekend is the same one as the big craft festivals in Arkansas, Joplin may even be a problem.

Pitt State is away on all three of the weekends that are presently listed. There is another Model Railroad event scheduled for the weekemd of the 26th of September. I am unable to give any details of that as of yet so please do not consider that weekend. Details of the other event will follow in the very near future.

    John:

I just checked and they are on the road (the football team) all three of those weekends so that is not an issue. The big Arkansas Craft Weekend is the October dates that you chose. This includes Bella Vista, Applegates, and War Eagle. These could have a spill over to Joplin. You might want to call some motels there to see if they perceive a problem.

I would vote for the Oct. 17/18 weekend for the following reason. Anyone traveling from a long distance would be able to enjoy and appreciate our beautiful fall colors which should be at their best that weekend. I know to some this might sound silly to those of you that are not from around here, but RR enthusiaists travel from hundreds of miles away to photograph trains that very weekend in locales juist south of Pittsburg. If one is interested in extending their weekend any of us familiar with the area can tell you where to go.
The route that John is proposing to take the train ride would pose some beautiful scenery of its own that weekend.

    Guys,

I just found out that I am going to have to void the Oct. dates due to Watco needing to use the basement and a train ride conflict on Sunday. I was also made aware that the MoPac Historical Societies meet in Omaha is the same weekend. It looks like the Sept. dates are going to have to do. I will discuss with Bob tomorrow evening so we can have a date set by this Friday.

    Thanks,
    John Chambers

Rats - the Tigers have a home football game on Sept. 12 -13 but it is non-conference so I won't feel guilty sneaking away if I don't have to work.

    That's a long game.

I've only got one thing to say...
Got a bill that's big enough to twist the tiger's tail.
