Box Car in MR

Did anyone see the article in Model Railroader on Meat Packing and right there in the middle all those Swift refers is a Frisco box car with people standing in the door?

Tom - Yes, the January 2010 MR, page 48. The car is way off in the distance in the pic - it appears to be a USRA DS boxcar.

There are a couple of guys standing in the open door. Party time!

I thought it was a USRA DS too, but when did they start building those? The photo caption says it was taken in 1917.

Sorry for not stating that was the Jan issue. I was talking to some one today who said that they had just gotten theirs and I have had mine since last Friday.

Steve - You are correct - the SLSF USRA double sheathed box cars did not start arriving until 1919. The Frisco had the largest number of these cars - some 3500, and, per Al Westerfield, they were from seven different builders - more cars and more builders than any other USRA DS box car user.

Al notes the Frisco did have both single sheathed and double sheathed non-USRA cars earlier in the 'teens, and that in 1916 these cars were the first to carry the now-familiar coonskin herald. If the MR pic is indeed from 1917 as stated, the SLSF car must have been one of these earlier cars with a coonskin herald.

I just got it today. I was sitting here reading on Pg.46 about the flashers. Pretty cool to see some older wooden Frisco freight cars.
Ship it on the Frisco!!!
