Hello Y'all,

I got bit by the bug again today. I am sitting here waiting on the 1x1 lumber from Kappler so I can build Fredericksburg Jct, and I gotta build something. So, I looked to see what I could build. What did I grab? DEBENLLC's Sequoia 4002, Repair Hoist Kit, for my car knockers shop.

This is a very straight forward kit. A box of wood, instructions, three pieces of casting and off to the races you go. The tools I used were simple:

NWSL Chopper

Ruler

Digital Caliper/Micrometer

MicroMark Magnetic Jig

MicroMark Brass Clamps

Elmer's Wood Glue

Various Tweesers

Pounce Wheel

X-acto knife

Various files

Pencil

Dr. Pepper

The Dog

The instructions are basic. You need to know how to convert scale distances. The Jim's Dollhouse Scale Conversion Calculator online is invaluable. Key to this build is keeping everything square.
It's a pretty straight forward build but it took me about 9 hours to complete. I added the catwalk next to the pulley, the two Campbell Fire Barrels, which I need to paint, and some of the extra bracing to shore up the hoist.
The kit also comes with NBW's to install, which I will do after I apply the Instant Age, then stain it Oak. I'll paint the bolts with Polly S Flat Aluminum, then rust them up. I'm ordering ladders from Rusty's Stump for the crew to get on top of the hoist and getting some HO Scale chain and hooks to finish it off. I may add a small work table with tools on the side of the hoist for added realism. I definitely need to get another one for the locomotive shop. I highly recommend Richard Bendever and his wife Debbie over at DEBENLLC. Their products are great! You can visit them at: www.debenllc.com.

Here are the pics so far. Enjoy!

=========================================
A fellow Frisco modeler, Gary L. Hemmingway, a Frisco.Org member, is dying. His wife Kay called me last night, he will probably not last the week. He has no red blood cells left which is leading to Leukemia. His kidneys have failed, and they decided not to put him on dialysis and just let him go. He has been a good firend of mine here in Topeka, KS where we both live.
==========================================

Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary, his family and friends.

My cousin, Treff Earney Jr., is a long serving Frisco, BN, BNSF maintenance of way employee. A few years ago, he found this item lying along the Salem Branch near Steelville. He was gracious enough to give it to me.

Until now, I have kept this in my parent's garage in Wesco, but today during a belated Mother's Day visit, I decided to bring it home. Looking inside the base which affixes to the top of the switch stand, I noticed "Stl. & Frisco" in raised letters.

I have never heard of our beloved railroad referred to like this and was wondering if anyone else had. When I got home, I sanded it off and painted it with good ol' Krylon BBQ Grill and Stove paint. Someday, I'd like to restore it properly and replace the missing reflectors.

Folks -
I've been going through all of the old Frisco Employee's Magazine issues online, trying to compile a spreadsheet of locomotive usage across the SL-SF from the regular feature, "Locomotive Fuel Performance Reports."

This one from the February, 1931 FEM caught my eye:

Seymour Sub: Engineer BUTLER, fireman STRICKLAND, engine 3, train 25, November 5, Mineral Wells to Seymour, handled 91,800 gross ton miles, burned 1,737 gallons oil, performance 18.8 gallons per 1,000 gross ton miles.

I'm wondering if this is a typo for a couple of reasons:
(a) I've not seen any other evidence of the 2-10-2 locomotives operating outside of the Eastern and Southern Divisions, and
(b) I was under the impression (mainly from Frisco Power) that all of the spot series locomotives were coal-burners?

Thanks in advance for anyone that can clarify.

Best Regards,

Yawn....

Boy am I tired, but still kickin'.

The idea came to me since San Antonio was hopping with military activity between 1913-1920, that I would create an interesting load with two artillery pieces of the period on a flat car. Fair enough, except that finding WWI vintage military equipment in HO Scale is non-existent!

Off to the world of military miniatures. I was able to find a 25MM version of the 75mm US Army field gun. I think it will work. I'm not the most precise calculator of scales, so if anyone can help me out here. The gun comes in at just under 7 feet tall scaled out.

The gun is the M1897 and M1897-A2 modeled after the famous French Canone de 75. I've tried to find dimensions of the gun, but I cannot. How frustrating.

Can anyone help me with scaling out 25mm against HO Scale?

Thanks,

Manny

I always have to do things a little differently and the same goes for my choice of DCC systems. Today I ordered a Sprog III DCC system which is both a programmer and a controller. $135.00 including shipping. Everything is included such as power unit and software and all you need is a laptop or home computer to make it all work. I will report on it as soon as I receive it and get it up and running. The functions are point and click right on the computer screen. Should be interesting. I can't hardly wait to get my engine # 151 up and running. Has anyone here ever used Sprog?

The Frisco’s Ash Gove Subdivision was a favorite. It was a bit of a throw back, since it retained its 19-teens era APBS semaphores, timetable/train order operation, and the affectations of such operations, i.e., extras, following sections, take-siding indicators, etc. Per the Eastern Division ETT #2, 9/9/73, four daily southbound freights, four daily northbound freights, a tri-weekly southbound local, and a northbound tri-weekly local plied the subdivision between Edwards and Nichols. The APBS-semaphores and the 7 open-agencies were more than adequate to handle the traffic.

When thinking of extra movements and trains running in multiple sections, we Frisco fans are drawn back to the war years and a single-track mainline plugged with trains running between St Louis and Springfield. This is exemplified by a train order found on page 173 of Collias’s Frisco Power.

We might be inclined to think that by the 70’s, the era of extras, and multiple-section trains was a thing of the past, but on the Ash Grove Subdivision, it was not the case. During the early 70’s, lead units bearing white and green flags were not that uncommon. This set of orders delivered to 2nd KCX is evidence that the Frisco was still “runn’n’ ‘em like streetcars” during the early 70’s.
Train order 17 is a Form E Time Order, which was addressed to trains Second KCX, NWF, and local 5810. First 135 was running about 30 minutes to the bad, and the DS set-up the wait order so the inferior trains would know where 135 and her following sections would be.
