The newsletter editor mis-captioned the photo. The man in the foreground is a member of the KCPD. Conductor Hood is in the cupola.
I wrote this article for the Dec. 1993 issue of "The Flyer", which was the monthly newsletter of the Smokey Hill Railway & Museum. The newsletter editor "punched" up the artice a bit, but the facts are accurate. The museum operates a small portion of the Frisco Highline. A piece of th old Leaky Roof mainline is still extant, and serves as a storage track.
I found a folder that contained the facts of this event in a box of Frisco paper that I bought at an auction. The folder contained photos, the autopsy, reports from the Frisco special agent who worked the case, and reports fom the KCPD. The boys envolved attended the same high school as I did, athough some 10 years earlier. I graduated from SWHS in 1972. Indeedthe family o one of the boys lived but a few blocks fom me.
We think of such events more in the context of modern life, and not something that would happen in the 50's.
