    Hello- I'm in Montgomery, AL, and grew up along the old CoG right of way between Eufaula and Ozark. I'm an armchair railfan, and recently had the good/mis-fortune to acquire former Frisco caboose 1255 after the convenience store to which it was attached caught on fire.     It really doesn't make much sense for a train (or several cars) from New Jersey to go down the Fort Smith Sub when they could have gone on to Neosho and hiked to the camp.     No, they aren't corrugated, like the material used for yard signs. One of the local HO layouts had steel mill structures made from that which looked okay, but I agree it wouldn't do backdrops well.     Roger, the second track being added in 1917 makes perfect sense, as all the bridges and culverts here are dated 1917. They would have needed to build the new concrete structures quite a bit longer than the old wooden ones from 1882 because they were not wide enough to accommodate the new double track roadway.     The 2nd (north) track between East Tulsa & Sapulpa, OK. was added in 1917 by SLSF, the south track was the original line built by the Atlantic & Pacific RR in 1882-1886. The middle track was probably the old siding at Bowden before the north track was added. The south track between Norris & Oma, OK. was abandoned in 1959 when CTC was installed as part of the new Cherokee Yard project, the rest of the double track is still in service. Roger

    Thanks Karl, the info is always appreciated. About 5 years ago the RR took out the telegraph poles along this line and I found 8 different variations of insulators along the S curve. I have them displayed above my front door. Fun stuff !

    Thanks for the tip! I'll have to look for that. Is this the corrugated plastic sheets? I've been able to find that as it's a common sign material, but haven't been able to find any foam core with plastic laminate. I'm sure that corrugated plastic would work, but I'm concerned that it's not a smooth surface, which could be an issue for a backdrop. My big concern with standard foamcore from a craft store is the reality of warping. I understand...

    Foreign line Pullmans were frequently seen on 704/709, mainly transporting troops to/from Fort Chaffee, and these would have at least passed through Springfield.     Vinita to Tulsa: 1882 Tulsa to Red Fork: 1885 Red Fork to Sapulpa: 1886 As far as I can tell, the double track was retired between Norris and Oma between 1956 and 1959 as part of the installation of CTC.

    On July 2nd of 1960, The Kansas Supreme court allowed Frisco to stop service of it trains from Monett to Wichita. On September 30th, the announcement was made that the last run would be October 12th of 1960. Eastbound #310 and Westbound #309. They consist of a locomotive, a baggage car, a combination mail and baggage and a 60 seat air-conditioned chair car.     Here are a couple pics that show Bowden in the 1940s, and again in the late 1970s. In the early pic is by Preston George and there are 3 sets of tracks, in the later pic there is just one line. The two photos were taken fairly close to each other. the S curve in Bowden is still a favorite spot for railfans and photographers. I live in Bowden and the area basically still looks the same today and is heavily used by BNSF and Stillwater...

We have a manufacturer here in Bentonville that gives away damaged 4x8 sheets. The covering is similar to PVC, takes some effort to cut it but it is quite strong and not affected by moisture.     Tracklaying progress has temporarily screeched to a halt. I was using a drill bit to punch holes for feeder wires through the roadbed and styrofoam (just using my fingers to twist the drill bit through) when I pushed a little too hard and the bit broke through the foam and I banged my hand against the layout. He was preparing to run some other black and white decals and the Frisco herald was the same color along with the timing of their run. I had given up on this particular herald, and was thinking about using the regular Frisco herald:confused: which would not have been prototypical. Accurail seems to be a good bunch (I forget the name of their principal). I talked with him a year or so back complementing them on how nice their older era Frisco cars look.     That is absolutely correct. Another technique we used was to use the feed valve to lower the brake pressure. Since we had not made the reduction at the brake valve, air continued to be pumped into the train. I will say, that in later years, that specific method for train braking was expressly prohibited, but, as they say, "you do what you have to do". Terry

    Thanks guys for the input, and explanations. I remember my Grandpa having mirrors with clips on them, he spent a lot of time switching in Quanah probably as much as he did on the road. I hope those visors worked better than the ones we have now. Millions of dollars for a locomotive nowadays, and such junk for windshield wipers and visors.

    That is a GP7. The 6 series brake valve stayed with the GP-7s until the very end. Those valves where not self lapping. If you had an air leak 'in your train' a lot of the engineers would make a minimum brake application and let the air leak do their braking. An interesting observation in this photo is the engineer has his cloves on the 'control stand.' Handy in case he needed them. Those sun visors above the engineers head would swing out to...

    The Frisco freight house doubled as a passenger station several years before passenger service in Joplin ended. Their was even a Pullman car set out on the west bound trip and picked up on the east bound trip (passenger train from Springfield to Wichita) which I belief was pulled off 1960.     The Kansas City Florida Special and Sunnyland (Trs. 105-106-107-108) carried mail and express to and from the southeast and the western states through the Kansas City gateway. I've seen head end cars from the Southern Ry, ACL, SCL, FEC, N&W, Seaboard, Central of Georgia, also UP and Rock Island. On the other route, The Will Rogers and Meteor might have cars from the B&O, PRR, NYC. Both routes also carried plenty of REA express cars. Tom G....

    I wondered about the Seaboard car, but when I saw another shot of it from another angle, It was definitely a two-toned grey not a green. There was a dark grey band along the windows with light grey above and below. The idea of foreign roads' cars operating over the Frisco does offer some nice modeling ideas.

    Many of the photos on that DVD show cars used for special movements. In regular service, B&O, Wabash, and PRR all had sleepers that at one point ran a regular route on the Texas Special. The PRR also had cars that were used on the Meteor. PRR even went so far as to paint a few sleepers to match the red and silver paint scheme. The other train(s) that saw regular foreign road passenger carrying cars were the trains from KC to Birmingham. ...

    While watching the Grants Park Frisco Museum DVD, I noticed a number of passenger cars from other railroads (Milwaukee Road, Seaboard and Illinois Central) mixed in with the passenger trains at the Springfield depot. How common was this and were there other roads that had cars that traveled on the Frisco. I did note that at least one Frisco car was painted in Seaboard colors so I'm guessing this was a regular visitor.

    Don, I am assuming that PSC would offer some variety with regard to what they offer, namely, one model from each of the 3, 4100-class groups. As well as a choice of with/without a booster, coal/oil burning, large/small tender numerals, cab with/without full window treatment, etc.

    Ted, I have plenty of pictures of the crane, but precious little else of Doe Run facilities. For obvious reasons they're pretty camera shy down there and it's hard to learn much from what you can see from public roadways. However, the crane is apart from the rest of their facilities in Buick and I was able to access it easily, without transgressing any No Trespassing signs although it is almost certainly on Doe Run property.     I'm going to start sending some stuff to PSC to see if I can poke him up to do a run of 4100s. We talked about the 1500s and he wasn't aware PFM had done those. Nobody has done the 4100s and these would be the same quality as the Firefly, coaches and the Hudsons. Anybody interested? They would be about a year out if he decided to do them. Time to heal after the other Frisco stuff of late.

    I'm starting a new switching layout, using the Inglenook concept. My prototype inspiration is the truck/train transfer crane at Buick, MO on the Lead Line branch. Why the Lead Line?     ...or you could combine the noodles with the peanut butter and add a little garlic, green onion and chile to taste. It is bound to be way more interesting than either one by itself. (I have not tried this, but the local Chinese Restaurant makes a similar dish that is fantastic.)
