FAQ

1.  How do I unsubscribe the Frisco Modelers' Information Group Mailing List?

Please send an email to Frisco-request@nshore.org with the the words "Subscribe to the FMIG mailing list" in the subject line. The message body is ignored.  An automated list processor will receive your message and automatically add you to the list.  You will only be able to send and receive FMIG Mailing list messages on the e-mail account from which you sent your subscription request.

PLEASE NOTE: For a digest version of FMIG e-mail, send your subscription request to frisco-d-request@nshore.org instead of the address noted in the previous paragraph.

2.  To submit an article, question, or comment to the list, subscribers may address email to "frisco@nshore.org" (and please include a meaningful subject in the Subject: field for the convenience of readers). The normal rules of mailing list courtesy should apply. These include (but are not limited to) at least the following:

Messages sent to the list should be about the St. Louis - San Francisco Railway. Other conversations should be directed to the individuals involved and not to the list at large. That is, cut the chatter and be careful of the destination of your replies.

Large listings of items for sale should not be sent to the list. Rather, submit an article explaining what is for sale, give a few examples, and give an email address or other method (URL, email file retrieval etc.) whereby interested readers can obtain the whole list of items offered.

Binaries (scanned photos etc.) should not be submitted to the list - handle them as above by submitting a brief article describing the file and how it may be obtained. You may post them in the appropriate area on the Frisco Frisco Resource Center.

Due to the unfortunate state of email delivery on the internet, subscriber addresses are removed from the list after a number of successive unsuccessful mail delivery attempts. If you find that you were a subscriber but have not been receiving articles or digests lately, please resubscribe.

To unsubscribe from a mailing list, simply send a message with the word (you guessed it :-) "unsubscribe" in the Subject: field to the -request address of that list.

As in, for FMIG: To: frisco-request@nshore.org Subject: unsubscribe

- or -

For the FMIG Digest: To: frisco-d-request@nshore.org Subject: unsubscribe

3.  In the event your address changes, it would probably be the wisest to first send an unsubscribe from the old address, and then a new subscribe from the new address. Be aware that if you have your mail forwarded to a different mailbox from the one from which you subscribed to the list, there may be some difficulties in unsubscribing.

Most (un)subscription requests are processed automatically without human intervention.

Do not send multiple (un)subscription or info requests in one mail. Only one will be processed per mail.

NOTE: The -request server usually does quite a good job in discriminating between (un)subscribe requests and messages intended for the maintainer. If you'd like to make sure a human reads your message, make it look like a reply (i.e. the first word in the Subject: field should be "Re:", without the quotes of course); the -request server does not react to replies.

Inquiries, comments, or mail distribution problems may be addressed to the list maintainer, Rick DeMattia (rad@railnet.nshore.org) or list administrator, Doug Hughes (w3ho@aol.com).

4.  The archive server - Every submission sent to this list is archived. The size of the archive varies. Only the last 30 single articles are kept, but all back issues of the digest are kept and can be retrieved from the archive server.

You can look at the header of every mail coming from this list to see under what name it has been archived. The X-Mailing-List: field contains the mailaddress of the list and the file in which this submission was archived.

5. Retrieving a misplaced single message - It may happen that you misplaced an important article from the list, one that you wished to reply to. You may be able to retrieve a copy of the message, providing it is still in the archive. First, identify the file number of the message to be retrieved. You may do this by sending a message like this:

To: frisco-request@nshore.org Subject: archive

send latest/LIST quit

Be sure to capitalize latest/LIST just as in the example. The archive server program will return you a mail message containing the file number, date, sender and subject of the articles presently in the archive. The format will look like this:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Last updated: Tue May 20 00:04:09 1997; next update: Wed May 21 00:04:09 1997

FILE DATE SENDER LINES SUBJECT ===== ====== ================== ====== =================================== 2179 May 18 E1607@aol.com (26) Re: [rrdiana] Re: business cars-sho 2180 May 18 PEK3@aol.com (38) New lantern reference 2181 May 18 Tom Coughlin (74) Date Nail collection for sale ... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

If you can identify the message you want to retrieve, then send a second mail message like this:

To: frisco-request@nshore.org Subject: archive

send latest/2181 quit

for example, to retrieve message 2181 of May 18 about Date Nail collection for sale. Please note though that the messages scroll off the archive as new messages arrive, so items at the top of the list can vanish very quickly. In that case you may wish to retrieve back issues of the digest version of the list, as in the previous example.

6.  Do I need to be a participant of the FMIG to join this list. No.

7.  What is the FMIG? An informal group of Frisco prototype modelers who share information about what they are building and their research results.

8.  How do I join the FMIG? Design, build, and/or run a Frisco prototype model railroad layout in any scale, era, or locale.

9.  How do I subscribe to the FMIG publications? You don't. There's no membership or subscriptions. Future newsletter issues will be mailed to any participant who desires a copy and who has supplied the reasonable costs of production and mailing. The newsletters are random in production.

10.  Are back issues available? Yes

11.  Which ones and how much? All 62 (about 2,000 pages worth) are available averaging about 10 cents per page.

12.  Do the comments made by list members reflect an official position of the FMIG? No. The FMIG is unofficial except for being a registered Special Interest Group (SIG) of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) The Frisco e-mail list is a service provided to interested Frisco prototype modelers. The discussions on this list are informal and uncensored. However, no abuse (personal insults or profanity) will be tolerated.

13.   Since this list is only for Frisco modelers, my e-mail address and my comments will not be read by people who are not on the list, right? Wrong. Internet e-mail is inherently insecure and subscription requests are not verified. If you post a message to this list you should assume that anyone can read it and that your e-mail address is globally available.

14.  Are there any "unwritten rules" for this group? Well, I suppose once they're included in the FAQ they aren't "unwritten," but there are few policies that list members have found useful.

They include:

a. Sign messages with your real name.

b. Include your city and state with your signature occasionally. People find it interesting to know where you live.

c. Avoid large, or controversial signature blocks.

15.  I'm fairly new to e-mail. Any suggestions?

a. Is the subject line still appropriate?

b. Re: Re: Re: - If you answer to an answer, some software always adds another 'Re:' to the subject line please delete the superficial ones, so we can read the real subject.

c. Answers / reply options - Every mail you have received via the list is from a list member (at least should be) so you have the option to answer to the individual or to the list - but avoid doing both.

16. This list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) will be automatically posted to the FMIG e-mail list on a monthly basis. Improvements to this FAQ are probably needed and are welcomed. Please send your ideas to Douglas J. Hughes (w3ho@aol.com)

17.  Are there some interesting web pages I should read?

Frisco Title page: http://www.frisco.org

Layout Design SIG main page: http://www.hooked.net/~lwm/sig/sig.html

Layout Design SIG e-mail archive: http://www.visi.com/~zoo/LDsig/

Layout Design SIG primer: http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/~smithbf/BFSpages/LDSIGprimer/TOC.html

Layout Design SIG, password-protected archive http://www.employees.org/~davison/ldsig/pr/ user: ldsig password: (5th word, page 9, LDJ14 + "96" i.e. "???????96")

NMRA: http://www.nmra.org/

17.  I would like to post a layout design and solicit comments from other layout designers about my plan. Is there a good way to do this? Yes, with a web page. You may create your own web page describing your layout plans or send materials to Larry Moseley, the manager of the Layout Design SIG's web site, at lwm@hooked.net or Mike Corley, the manager of the FMIG's web site, at conductor@frisco.org. If you create your own web page contact Larry and Mike when it is completed, and they will add a link to your page from the two SIGs' web sites.
