If you are doing it in b/y, get a set of Microscale 87-85 Frisco decals. If it is o/w, they have some sets for that scheme also, but I don't recall the number(s). Look up Microscale on line - they have a gazillion decal sets. I think they make the best decal. They also have the two solvent system that works really well - i.e., the "blue" and the "red". K
MS B/Y decals don't have the Barricade stripes on the ends, unless they have changed them. K4 SLSF yellow decals off ebay may be your easiest option
Craig, the K4 decals are nice and should work well for you. The Mask Island sets are nice also and include stripes too. For future reference, if you have decals that are more than a couple years old, give them a quick shot of dulcoat on the surface. Let that dry for a day and then use them like normal. That will save most decals from most railroad brands. I use lots of sets that are 10 to 50 years old that way. I use solvaset over them once they are on the model to settle them.It still works fine with the dulcoat on there. Good luck. Show us how you did!
FYI, Craig. There is a common misconception that the water takes off the surface. It really takes the paper off the back. So the "good" side can be cleared to protect them and not change how they function. Just don't use too much and make the decals thick and tough to settle on the model. I have occasionally faded decals on the paper. I have also sanded decals lightly before soaking them so it appears to be worn paint. I don't know if I'd recommend doing it but it works if you are brave or …. well. HA
It would not be a Thursday if I didn't post a workshop Wednesday it seems. I will burn a bunch of bandwidth and share some pics as I have been trying to finish my winter diorama. But took a week off with kidney stones again. UUUGGGHHH! Anyway, I am always on the hunt for interesting shapes of roots to use as trees on dioramas. I keep a stash of them in my scenery stuff. I added a few on this since they could be left bare and easy to see. I liked the split trunk on this one: This one I liked because I thought it looked like an old tree with vines growing everywhere in it. AKA every tree in my field.
Personally I think the abandoned car in the woods look gets over done in the model railroad world. But I had to join in. Ken Patterson has tubs full of old white metal castings and gave me a bag full of stuff. One was this 32 Ford coupe. To make it look a little more realistic as abandoned I used a Dremel to cut out all the windows and the roof insert. Then cut out the motor to add the d.o.a. look. Being white metal it was easy to dent up the fenders and then crush down the roof a little, like maybe a fallen tree hit or something. I rusted up the entire body and then stuck a tree up through the top to make it look like it sat a long time. Once it was planted I added a little snow to it and the new trees. They are still wet here but will dry matte and snowy. Hopefully some hot rodder will find her and save her from going back to the earth. Hope you like the stuff, I am about done now with it. Steve
Steve that's a new one for me, I have seen many junk piles and junk yards but not a tree growing through car. I like it.
On American Pickers, they saw a car with tree growing through it and I have seen other pictures as such.
There was one in the woods where I grew up I loved. I have a big collection of photos of trees through vehicles. Hemings Motor News does a calendar of them too. Glad you liked it!
I think I saw the same show Keith and I've seen photos also. It's more common than than you would think. You could go to any junk yard and will probably see trees growing though parts of vehicles. Joe
The best I have seen was a bicycle chained to a tree and left. It was about 8’ up on the tree with the chain inside the tree.
Funny story. I already have the Microscale 87-85 decals along with the Mask Island decal Stripe set. Well, guess I'll have more... One year ago today (Friday the 25th), I had brain surgery... That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Frisco Heavyweight RPO 2045 in the shop today getting it's coat of Pullman Green. I appreciate Mr Ken's (Wulfert) preparatory research that he was gracious enough to include when I purchased it from him.
Looking good Craig! Was that the Walthers ATSF RPO? Six wheel trucks, right? Did you take the combine also; and/or the coach? I still have the baggage car if anyone is interested. ATSF markings, six wheel trucks. Ken
It was a Walthers undecorated unit Mr Ken. Also, I didn't purchase any of the other heavyweights from you.
