Looking for suggestions, on this bridge. I was thinking, maybe backup water with a Spring out of the hole in back. Lay it on me ? What's the idea's ?? WOW, an old QA&P car, who woulda thought ?
For Wednesday, a little more Springfield GMC progress. LONG way to go but its gradually rounding the curve. Thanks for checkin it out.
I worked on my K4 more the last few days. Worked out binds, got motor set up, and put the boiler on and attached the tender: I set it up on DC and ran it around the layout. Worked fine forward, though it's NOISY: I was running it backwards when my wife called my upstairs to do something, and I left it running. BIG MISTAKE. While I was upstairs, it derailed and shorted out my transformer . The trailing truck wasn't in gauge, so I fixed that. I got it ready for a decoder, but am using an adapter in the meantime until it gets broken in: I've got another Bowser to work on, a K11: I wonder if I can "Frisco-ize" this one?
Lovin' all the pics. You guys are doing great. Steve: I don't know HOW you have the patience to take your modeling to the level you take it. (Cables, corrosion/etc, on a battery???) Amazing. Shore like those Bowser kits. I'm a steam kit sickie, too. In the dateless past I've super enjoyed tinkering with steam kits and kit bashing therewith. I intend to do some more, but all in good time. (That's just ONE of the reasons I've decided to go dual-era for my layout.) EDIT: I remembered a pic I could post! SO, here's a pic of an Arbour Models "Brooks Mogul" steam kit waiting for me to get the time/bug to start it. I have two of these Arbour Mogul kits (plus several MDC "Old Timer" kits of various types.)... As for my current task: I'm involved in boring stuff for Workshop Wednesday. (However, I enjoy the task.) I'm sorting and taking inventory of where I'm at with both era's. I'm also reorganizing my out building. It has dawned on me that once I get my out equipment inventoried and into storage trays, and restructure my storage shelves (lower them), I can actually purchase plywood and Homasote and start installing the lower stage shelving and even lay track. (7 tracks.) Wow. How did I get to this point? So for today, once I'm done browsing the forums I frequent (sippin' on some coffee while I'm at it)... it's out to the building to inventory/sort/store my steam engines/steam engine kits/steam engine parts... then it's time to take a look at my shelving brackets to see if I want to reuse or purchase new ones. Armed with that info, I can purchase new shelving L brackets (if I decide to go with new), plywood, and find Homasote anytime the weather/conditions permit, and mood inclines. Oh wait... I've also got to decide what to do with my professional-sized paint booth. The unit its sitting on puts it too high to fit under the proposed bench work. Can't go lower, or it's not practical to use for painting. Hm. Andre
Steve, Gary - You guys are a pleasure for me to watch. Andre - That looks like a nice kit. I have seen some of your previous modeling; I am awaiting more.
How old are you, Sherrell? Hopefully, you're young and thus have a lot of years you can wait. Andre "Ol Glacier" Ming
Re: "Frisco-ize" a Bowser NYC K-11 These locomotives apparently had 69 inch drivers and 26 x 26 cylinders. Tables in Frisco Power show the Schenectady 1040 to 1059 Pacifics had 69 inch drivers and 26 x 28 cylinders. Many retained the driver size upon rebuilding. The Bowser kit provides a starting point, though the stroke is a bit short.
I remembered to take a few quick shots today of what's going on here. I kind of rotate among all of these engines and am slowing making progress. Couple of them are near done and need a final grit blasting/cleanup.
Don - I love that you are doing the two 0-6-0 switchers. Not many models of them are around! Beautiful work on all of these projects. K
Thanks guys. Andre it’s easy for me with no layout to be a distraction unfortunately. Don those look great. Gary you never disappoint on a Wednesday update.
I'll eventually have a 3600-3700 and 3800 series 0-6-0 at Newburg. As you can tell, I'm going nutso with 4000 class Mikes. Same with the little 4-6-2s. I like the 1039 as it was one of three that had a Delta trailing truck. Makes for a nice looking little Pacific. The ugly duckling 1350 class...........well. I also have a 187 and a 1500 waiting for some attention. The 187 has new cylinders and a few other details added. Its in pieces, so not pictured. The 1500 is still new in the box. I do have a couple of USRA Lt Mikes, both PFM I would sell. One is the final run with the cab interior, can motor and deck plate. Other is an older PFM and has a correct tender.
Even in their current state, it's neat that they still look decidedly like Frisco locomotives-specifically the 1350 class with the hunchback boiler course and external feedwater heater and the Mike with the extra headroom cab roof. Very glad you've been going nutso with them, Don.
I've heard those Arbour models can be a challenge. Good luck. I keep getting outbid for an MDC "Old Timer" kit, but I've got a lead on one now... My K4 kept derailing in reverse. The trailing truck wheel set had come apart--the tread came off the wheel. Fixed with some epoxy, but found it would short if backing through a curve to the left. The tread was touching the frame, so a little clear nail polish and some filing and all is good. I tested the stall current--1.8 amps! Whatever decoder it gets is going to get a workout. Running is .35 amps, so I guess it'll be ok.
