Workshop Wednesday

  1. I’ll have to find the DD35s but here is U50s, so still massive power. This is in the 9/86 Diesel Era. It was handy.

  2. The American Rails site has a pic of a DD40x in a pool power strung with CNW power. So it’s at least showing they were shared there.

Thanks a bunch for sharing that. That is a lot of head end HP for one train.

  5. Youre welcome. I like the variety in both trains too. Even a black and yellow straggler.

Bob, that is some fine carpentry

Those little compressors with a tank are perfect for airbrushes (the tank eliminates air pulses and provides better paint control) and their light weight makes them very portable.

Here is an update on the church that I built for my layout. I was able to tone down the weathering to my liking. I tried isopropyl alcohol with q-tips and the rubber makeup erasers, but they didn't seem to remove the pastel chalk. My wife suggested that I try one of her Magic Eraser cleaning sponges and it worked very well. Thank you all for the tips. Here are a few updated photos. Thanks, Mark DSC08144 (1024x960).jpg DSC08145 (1024x1001).jpg DSC08146 (1024x894).jpg

    Great stuff Mark and Steve!

Delayed a day by website problems, but here are a couple of items from the workbenches:

I managed to get the new layout section up on its feet (er, casters). This section will separate the Lightning Creek Mine from the Cherokee Yard.

    New-Module-waffle-sm.JPG

^^ Adding the "waffle" mesh to the bottom of the section frame.
(No, you cannot ever have too many clamps)

    New-Module-Pink-sm.JPG

^^Up on its feet (casters) with pink foam added. Two inches of foam for a descending area in the foreground. The track will be up on a fill and curve parallel to the ledge in the top inch of foam cut out here.

    New-Module-w-neighbors-sm.JPG

^^ Placed next to its future neighbors. I will add two small rectangular box additions to the sceniced sections to fill out the back corners. I also plan to extend the mine tracks in the foreground by 8-12 inches.

I also managed some weathering progress of a half-dozen or so cars with the new airbrush. Here is a Wichita Northwestern Mather boxcar (Proto 2000 model)

    WNW-sm.JPG

I also worked on adding the signage to the "Blue Front Bakery"...still need to get some smaller font for the rest of the lettering.

    Blue-Front-sm.JPG

I had been watching "Boomer Diorama" on YouTube and as a result assembled this rig for scratchbuilding (alignment of edges and cutting square cuts. Give him a try, some good stuff there for scenery and structure building. I won't say "weathering" in front of Steve, as he is the master there.

    cutting-surface-alignment-sm.JPG

Going to start building the brickyard buldings and try to find some 3-d printed kilns. I will post a few more items on the layout build thread for the Crawford and Cherokee shortly.

Take Care All, and Happy St. Pat's day!

  12. I finished up a few things over the last couple weeks. My dad turns 85 today! So I had painted up a couple more in his fleet for his gifts. But I need to take pics still. A genesis Gp40 and a Stewart Baldwin VO. I’ll get pixs sometime.

For myself I finished this up. 1 /12 scale RC. Done of you may have watched the old Red Green show where he drove the Opossum Van. I have always loved that thing so I built one for my yard adventures. Remember if the women don’t find you handsome let them find you handy. Keep your stick on the ice…. It was a Canadian show. If you never saw it waste a little you tube time on checking it out.

I have been working on a few projects for a few months, I never throw anything away, the wife reminds me often that I should throw away some junk, but hey it my junk.
Speaking of junk, this is a Athearn caboose from a wreck that was repurposed into a derrick train caboose/ tool car. I painted/ weathered then added the Miller genset/welder and the cutting torch kit and JOBOX tool box from custom finishes, a few barrels, torch bottles from Tichy, some jacks and stands as well as re-rail frogs from Details West. Used brass wire to make the end and side railings/grabs some tool boxes from Precision scale and a few other odds and ends. Some Evergreen styrene was used to complete the car. I bent up some coupler cut bars for it.
Painted the car with some old silver Floquil and made some decals up for QA&P MW service. Anyway here it is ready to be put into service.

Next is the derrick boom car, this was made from a part of an MDC flat car, part of an Athearn gondola, with some metal caboose step castings. I never throw anything away. The details include wood cribbing for the derrick, spreader bars from Tichy and one made from Stryrene various details from woodland scenics and others. Painted with Floquil old silver, and some QA&P MW decals. Work trains can be a lot of fun to build. I enjoy not being tied down to a specific prototype to model. Bent up some coupler cut bars for it too. Next step is to take these cars out to the barn and put them into service. I have made some updates to this car since I posted some images years ago.

    Hey Steve,
No rust on that 2nd out SLSF GE. too much oil and dust on it for that, no smoke out the stack so prolly DIC. Hey at least they have 2 EMD's to move the train "ducking for cover"

  17. I have a few U boat pics where the entire body is covered in oil Tom, they still get worse than this one. Ha. I still laugh at your comment years ago here that eventually the last GE unit will be towed to scrap by an SD 9!! Hahahahhaaaa

  19. I like that welder car Tom. Great stuff. All the little detail pieces really add to the believablity. Nice work like usual.

  20. Still grinding along on the 1700 caboose taco stand. The exterior is getting assembled still. Adding, painting etc lots of gradually smaller pieces.

I have a BMX bike that will get chained to a post. I got trash bags in my trash cans and tonight will be making trash. Starting to get other pieces painted and glued in. The containers for napkins, menus and red and gree hot sauce on the tables. I have a Spanish menu for the sides once I get a frame built. It finally feeling like there is an end in sight.
