Thanks Tom, Both winch cables are picture hanging wire but two different gauges. I annealed them with a MAPP gas torch to soften them and add some color from the heat. Your SDs look great Tom. I love those QA&P units you turn out. The grilles must have a lot to drill out but it is sure worth it.
I know I know it still not a Frisco model but here is this weeks progress on the Katy wrecker. Mostly paint work. Caution some very dirty pictures here! Thanks for checking it out as always. I love that this thread has been so active with everyone's projects.
Thanks Ken. The cut the seat with a dremel and the foam is from a blob of great stuff foam I cut down to fit. I think every old truck is worn out in the same spot.
I have been looking at your images Steve, since you posted them. Trying to imagine how I could even come close to modeling the wear and tear, the cables, the just plain superior weathering and simple beating this model represents. This may be some of your best work I would appreciate you showing some progress images of how you use oil paints or other modeling tech nicks. I know you have said what you use. But I want a lesson on how you do it.
Here's my contribution, been busy finishing up 3 brass cabooses...I chose #28 for the side door because I've seen a few models of #27 but none of #28. This one was a real bargain at $55 off of eBay, it was already painted red & black so all I had to do was apply the yellow & decals...I wish I knew what he used for the red because I really like the color...For the standard cupola I chose #76 in honor of the real one on display at the Mammoth Springs, AR., spent many hours playing on her when I was kid...For the extended cupola I picked #1248, again I spent a lot time around her in Birch Tree where she is on display. The hardest part of this model was installing the glass in the cupola, you really have twist & turn to get spotted correctly...Roger
On the freight car side I've been adding a few new gondolas as Frisco hauled many cross ties out the Ozarks using this type of car...I've also been renumbering several cars with new block letters using left overs from Microscale's Frisco Hoppers & Gondolas decal set...Roger
Painted the tops of the Athearn GPs, started assembling the fans, but they seem to be missing their spacer rings listed in the instructions. (Which were a little disappointing, in that they listed the parts, but the numbers in the instructions were not on the parts or their sprues/runners.) I have a little more spot putty work to do.
Andre thank you very much for the compliments. Glad you enjoy it. Tom,thanks as always I know you enjoy a dirty model too. I will do a little write up in the how to threads. Not a problem I have more to paint and plenty more projects. Trial and error is really what I do though. I will gladly share what I do but it is not a science for me and I'm sure not how others might do it. My life has usually been against manufactures recommendations and voiding warranties! HA I will do one for oils and one for chipping fluids and chipped/peeling paint too. Thanks again guys,Steve
Too busy working Mizzou basketball games and engrossed in winter sports watching to do much...but did do a bit of tinkering on a Tichy USRA panel side rebuild. Squeezed in a bit of initial work on a TV tray watching curling.
Won eBay auction for Atlas/Kato GP7 trucks--they are the same as Stewart F3 trucks, so I repaired my F3: I worked on my Bowser Old Lady Connie some more. I tried replacing the magnet with supermagnets, and ground off the cast headlight and filled with JB Weld: I got the binds out, but it seems to have a wobble...
Hurray! Ok, this was weird. The sprue with the spacer rings had stuck to my sweater and eventually fell to the floor. Thankfully, I hadn't stepped on it. A video of me looking all over for them with it stuck to me would've been funny. My wife purchased the towels, I'm sure they were on sale. ;-)
Its been a challenge to work on things, my wife, Miss Carla, is recovering from surgery and is not supposed to bend down or lift more than 5 lbs, so I am trying to perform those actions whenever the need arises and treat her with extra care. But I have managed to get more done. Added Leslie 5 chimes, including to the Atlas unit, assembled and added fans to the Athearn BB shells. Now the profiles are a little more "Frisco".
Thanks Ken. She's recovering nicely. She just has to take it easy for 4 more weeks. (Surgery was to remove an 8.5 cm non-cancerous cyst and such items to prevent a recurrence.)
I worked on my DCC++ system a bit more. I soldered a 7805 voltage regulator to it, and wired in a phone jack for throttle connection: My order of warm-white strip LEDs, showed up, so I installed lighting in some passenger cars: My Bowser Old Lady didn't have a drawbar or the piece for the back of cab, so I cut one from circuit board and I made a pattern and cut one from .060" styrene, respectively: Unfortunately, the wheels seem to slip and it doesn't pull. As near as I can tell, one set of drivers is not making good contact with the track, so it's going to take some work.
