Workable 2-6-0?

Would this pass in some way as a Frisco or maybe ex-Cape Girardeau Northern 2-6-0? I love how my Roundhouse runs but is it worth detailing to better represent a Frisco loco for my obscure branchline?

    Jim,

I have an article about a MDC 2-6-0, retro fitted with a Cary Pittsburgh Boiler, and uses Mantua 50" drivers. I can share it with you if you'd like. I'd think that the MDC in either form could be made to represent a Frisco Mogul. I don't think that every locomotive on the Frisco was photographed. It's called representational licensing. Go for it!

    Jim,

Followup: Go into the historical section, motive power, steam locomotives, 2-6-0, and you'll find great pictures. The Cary Boiler with Mantua 50's on the MDC is a dead ringer. The MDC RH as is is a good start too, but the straight boiler presents a problem if you are aiming for 100% accuracy based on a known picture.

    Jim,

I've been researching your initial question.

Here is a picture of Frisco Mogul 345, which built upon a MDC 2-6-0, Cary Boiler, 50" Mantua Drivers would be a dead ringer. This photo is dated 2/44.

The 350 number series will work in that combo.

Jim, I'm sure you could work some of your magic on one of these. I think the new Roundhouse steam locomotives look great-a little spartan-but still really nice looking models. The tapered boiler on the prototype vs. the straight boiler on the model looks like the only significant difference. I'm not one to aim for 100% accuracy, though.

How well does one of these engines pull? My IHC 4-4-0 can pull ten 40 ft. box cars around 18" curves with relative ease, but it doesn't look as good as this model.

Thanks, Manny. Sounds like a future project. Right now the coonskin I slapped on the front will have to do. That photo is nice.

Pat, I don't think I have ten boxcars but my gut feeling is that it's a real mule. I'll lash up everything I have and see how she does. My curves are 18" also.

    Jim,

The Frisco LOVED the NY Style Air Pumps and replaced all the engines that were acquired with Westinghouse units. That is one replacement you would make to make your 2-6-0 more Frisco like.

Second, with very thin brass or even styrene (to insure no electrical shorts) you could make the proper counter weights, macaroni style and cover up the Cresent style.

Third, remove the whistle off the top of the dome and relocate to the fireman side, and add the appropriate whistle shield.

Fourth, change out the generator to the proper steam style.

Fifth, change out the headlight, or add a headlight visor to the stock unit.

Sixth, add steps over the steam chest.

Seventh, add shades over the side cab windows, and add the canvas in back for the cab. I have an article on how to make it out of a tea bag that looks and works great! Cheap and easy too!

I'm sure there are quite a few more cheap easy tricks to do. You get the point. A 345 style Mogul is on my list of things to do!

When do we get a video of the 2-6-0 pulling all the freight cars and the baggage/passenger coach around on video. That would be awesome! Puh-weeze??????
