Interesting. Back when I ran locomotives for Watco, I was loaned-out several times to the South Kansas and Oklahoma (SKOL) in Winfield, KS. I was over their rails throughout the area and I am having a hard time placing these locations. Anyone here know what the ancestry is of the rails the SKOL uses in Winfield? Was it the Santa Fe? For what it is worth, once while in Winfield I operated on some street trackage. Quite an experience to heard a quartet of wide-cab ex-CN GP40s pulling tonnage as you crept through 4-way stops at intersections! Andre Ming
The SKOL track in Winfield is from two different companies. The east/west main line that is welded rail that goes by the former Santa Fe main street depot that is now the Pizza place is former Santa Fe track. The track that runs down through the streets out to the Rubbermaid plant is former Missouri Pacific. The Frisco track is mostly gone. The last bit in the downtown area that was still in was a spur to a scrap metal dealer west of Main Street. I believe it is gone now. The crossing showing in the Sanborn map is west of Main Street. It shows the Frisco, MoPac and Santa Fe all crossing within the same area. If you know where to look, the foundation of the Frisco depot is still visible today. John Chambers
