    Hello frisco folks
can anyone help me? does any company make valve gear kits for mdc/roundhouse steam kits? I have a harriman 4-6-0 that looks like a pretty good starting place to model 1406. I allso have two harriman 2-8-0's that need to be frisco models, any advice on which class of frisco engine comes closest to these models?
thank you all very much, craig

Precision Scale (ex Kemtron) makes/made a set of valve gear for the MDC/Roundhouse 0-6-0. I have a set somewhere - I've had this kit half-built for about 20 years. I got it during the FMIG meeting here in StL during the early 1980's, as Doug and I talked MDC into providing several door prizes for us.

Progress comes slowly in my shops!

I do not recall if Precision Scale/Kemtron also made valve gear for the MDC 4-6-0, 2-8-0 and other kits.

  3. If i remember correctly when Kemtron made the valve gear kit and the steam chest kit to go with it, Round house only had the 0-6-0 and the 0-6-0t. The 4-4-2 and the 2-6-2 were more "modern" engines and had valve in the kit. RHT

thank you guys for your input, I do have a 0-6-0 kit too, but the first loco I was planing to work on was the 1406 from the mdc/roundhouse 2-6-0. If precision scale does not make a valve gear kit does anyone, or will I just have to live without valve gear. I've done a lot of diesel modeling, but I'm kinda new to the steam modeling. I'm kinda proud of my work on my A&O 70 tonners, but now I think I'm ready to tackle a iron horse or two!

  5. I have looked for a Kemtron valve gear kit and steam chest with no luck. I am considering picking up a AHM 0-4-0 (delux version) and trying to use that valve gear and steam chest (cross-kitting as it use to be called). RHT

RHT - I have a surplus Precision Scale (Kemtron) brass cylinder/steam chest set (#31193) for the MDC/Roundhouse 0-6-0 if you want it. My cost was $12.25 years ago. It's yours for that (plus s/h) if you want it. Let me know.

The NIB (new in bag) Precision Scale (ex Kemtron) MDC/Roundhouse 0-6-0 brass cylinder set/steam chest item has been sold. Thanks to those who expressed interest.

Years ago I purchased a valve gear kit from Bowser intending to model one of the 1200-1300 BLW 2-8-0s using the Harriman MDC kit. It worked OK, but I never did finish the rest of the conversion. It's so old, it had an open-frame motor. I did build a styrene dog house for the tender. I still have the pieces in the basement. You might consider Bowser as an alternative.

The Valve Gear from a Bowser H-9 Consolidation kit is supposed to be a direct fit for the MDC/Roundhouse Harriman 2-8-0s. I bought a set, but to make it work, you need the crossheads and siderods, too, so that project is on the back burner. I'm not sure what the status of ordering parts from Bowser is right now, either.
