UPDATED: Frisco Slides on eBay

    Guys and gals,

    There is an auction on eBay for many Frisco slides from a collection (900 to 1000 slides). I am interested in seeing these acquired for group use on this site. If you are interested in the same, please send me a private message.

    I don't know - seems to be a lot of BN-defaced Frisco units included. Everytime I see this graffiti on a once-proud Frisco locomotive or caboose I get heartburn.

    I'm not trying to be a spoil sport, but I have some questions that I think need to be addressed in the open. Who is going to be the Executor of this collection? How easy is the access going to be? I shared with you the intent of why I wanted to purchase the collection. I want to use it to eventually do decals. I have business concerns from that end. If everyone will agree to unconditional usage for that purpose, I'll jump in, but I need to know, from everyone involved, the who's, what's, and how's. It should, in my opinion, be discussed openly. The ultimate is to preserve Frisco history. That's what my main focus is.

    As stated earlier, this process would involve the site owning the images. High resolution scans would be available to the members of the site. As far as the physical slides, I do not know who would be the trustee to hold them. It does not need to be me as I have never owned a slide projector in my life. Someone would need to be chosen to be the person to hold the slides. If the slides were scanned and high resolution images were available, I am not sure why anyone would need the physical slides. But, as I said, I've never owned slides before.

    Obviously, "preserving Frisco history" is the goal of this. It would do no one any good if one person buys these and keeps them hidden away. I believe that this site needs to make content available to the masses. If we get these slides and scan them and make the pictures available to everyone, then everyone can enjoy them for many years to come. This is why I try to find as many documents and things as possible and then upload them to the site. I have quite a few more to offer. It's just a case of finding the time to scan them. I am plugging away though. I think I have spent several hundred dollars on things solely for the purpose of sharing with others and not keeping them to myself.

    For this purpose, I feel that it is easier to pool funds to make a purchase than to have us beat each other up to try and get them. If we did not do it this way and I bought them personally, I would just buy a slide scanner and scan them and upload them all to the site. If I did that, everyone would have access to the photos, but I would have to pay (probably) a lot of money to get them to do that.

    If "we" win, I assume that the slides would be shipped to me. I am thinking that I might buy a slide scanner myself and scan them. Then, I would ship them to a trustee if we can decide on someone. I would not want to hold the slides long-term as my wife feels that I have "too much stuff" already. I am downsizing to what can be held on one metal rack (model railroad stuff and memorbilia) and one bookcase for books. :)

    After the slides were scanned, we could upload them to the site and provide a .zip file for download of all of them, and possibly a DVD or CD for folks that could not download them. I feel that as a group we could get these but I am not wanting to talk dollar amounts publicly

    Before anyone gets into this too deeply, please take a minute and look over the slide scanners available from Adorama (link attached), a reputable photo supply dealer in New York. I have a scanner that will handle three slides at a time, very slowly, and produce scans that aren't good for much of anything. The scanner used by White River Productions, which produces books plus a whole bunch of historical society mags is about a $2,000.00 unit. This scanner yields high quality images and works quickly. I mention this because before anyone says, "I might buy a scanner," realize that if you buy anything that's any good at all, you are talking about a unit that will cost upwards of a grand. Also, bear in mind that even though you (we) might be buying original slides, we are not buying any rights to use them commercially, e.g., publishing a book or magazine article. If somebody wants to scan slides for strictly internal use, I have lots of them, purchased over the years from Chione, Trackside Slides et. al., that I am happy to lend out, but again, they do not come with any publication rights.

    This has become too difficult for me to consider being a part of. I do not want to get into any misunderstandings with anyone on the board to simply try to produce a decal. The ownership/rights issue is getting too complicated. I'll look to stick with my turn of the century programs. No offense meant to anyone. GS brings up the same thought that I had earlier but neglected to post. The Epson V700 scanner costs close to $900.00, and I'm saving up for that one. Thanks anyway guys.     Actually, I am glad you posted that. If someone has slides, do you buy publication rights to it, or do you have the rights as long as you don't sell it. I see it sometimes, folks are always saying don't pirate, photos. I am not sure how you know who has rights or not. Who says, its an original. I am sure this doesn't sound as silly, as it seems.

    There would be no issue for me on the photos, since no one can own the rights to the physical piece of the railroad equipment in the photo. That belongs to the railroad; and since I am only "lifting" the lettering images off the picture to reproduce in decal form, there is no copyright infringement. The photo doesn't come into play. Just the lettering. So that isn't a concern.

    I must be missing something because it's not too complicated in my mind at all.

    1) A bunch of Frisco slides are for sale on eBay.
    2) Rather than someone buying them and storing them away where none of us can see them, I would like to see them available to the members on this site.
    3) Instead of several of us outbidding each other on eBay I believe we could pool our resources to buy the slides.

    That's not complex at all.

    As far as scanner quality, etc., if you look at this sample photo that I uploaded to the site...

    ...this is the kind of quality that works for my purpose.

    As a matter of fact, my purpose is no more than looking at the photos. Most people's purpose is the same. I don't think anything here is complicated.

    If I (or anyone else) goes out and takes a picture, as the photographer, I hold the rights to the image. If I sell the slide, either the original or a duplicate, the rights stay with me unless I SPECIFICALLY sell them as well. The photographer always has the commercial rights regardless of who owns the physical image.
