Folks, A discussion regarding the 1940 photo on the Frisco Archive; I believe Karl has correctly identified as a troop train. http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...stbound-at-Shrewsbury-Missouri-circa-1940.jpg In any event, the lack of any white or green flags on it has started me wondering. I've usually assumed that troop movements ran as extra trains. However, would they have ever run under timetable authority as a regular first class train or as a following/last section of one? Best Regards,
All of the above. Troop trains were run as extras, as following sections of passenger or freight trains, and troop bearing cars were tacked onto the end of scheduled passenger trains. Two Frisco examples are included in the ICC Historical Records, which are cited in post #4 in this thread: http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/troop-trains-question.6491/#post-50325
Thanks very much, Karl. This provides me with a bit of flexibility when it comes to adding some passenger operations on our layout. I remember the vague details of the Menfro derailment, but if I knew it was a troop train, I'd completely forgotten. Sometimes I believe I've forgotten more than I actually ever learned. Best Regards,
